The Long Island Lutheran Crusaders can call themselves national champions after winning the 2025 The Throne high school basketball tournament. New York’s top team in the On3 Composite Team Rankings defeated Texas’ Allen Eagles in the title game 71-68.

The Crusaders and the Eagles established their championship showdown by dominating their semifinal assignments. Long Island Lutheran completed an 83-56 victory over the Brennan Bears, while Allen defeated the New Jersey’s Plainfield Cardinals 84-51.

Initially, the championship game of The Throne high school basketball tournament looked like a one-sided affair. The Crusaders raced to a 27-15 first quarter lead which turned into a 43-29 advantage at halftime.

However, Texas’ number two team and eighth in the nation stormed back via a furious second half run. Allen outscored Long Island Lutheran in the third (20-16) and fourth (19-12) quarters. However, despite that effort, the Eagles came up short, leading to the Crusaders’ three-point victory.

Kiyan Anthony was named the Finals Most Valuable Player after finishing with 25 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Dylan Mingo added 15 points and nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Meanwhile, Kayden Mingo finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. In addition to the winning The Throne championship, the Crusaders also took home a $10,000 prize from the National Basketball Association Players Association Foundation.

Conversely, DeAndre Thomas led Allen with 25 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Antoine Shannon added 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Trenton Pane finished with ten points and six assists.

The victory improved Long Island Lutheran’s record this season to 24-6. They defeated the Highland Hawks in the opening round this tournament by the NBPA and Gold Level Sports and Entertainment. After this victory, the Crusaders will compete in the Chipotle Nationals, wherein they will face Prolific Prep in the quarterfinals.

Conversely, Allen suffered only their third loss in 39 games this season. Their previous loss came against Duncanville in the semifinal of the Texas Class 6A Division 1 boys basketball state tournament.
