Mississippi High School Football Games of the Week

The month of October is set to kick off for Mississippi high school football this week, and several ranked teams will face off in what should be an exciting slate of games in the Magnolia State.

This week features four ranked matchups Friday evening and a handful of other tough tests for top-25 teams in the Mississippi On3 Massey Ratings.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

Top high school football games in Mississippi

No. 3 Tupelo at No. 18 West Point — Friday, Oct. 4
Undefeated and ranked No. 3 in the Mississippi On3 Massey Ratings, Tupelo heads on the road fresh off of a 35-14 win over Houston (Tenn.). Top-100 junior defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy and senior Ole Miss corner commit Maison Dunn headline the No. 2 defense in the state. The Golden Wave will take on 2-2 West Point as 14-point favorites. West Point has won two straight over Noxubee County and Neshoba Central after dropping its first two games to No. 11 Louisville and No. 4 Starkville by a combined 10 points. West Point pulled off the road upset last year at Tupelo 21-20.

No. 23 DeSoto Central at No. 5 Grenada — Friday, Oct. 4
Since dropping an early-season game to Houston (Tenn.), DeSoto Central has beaten Lake Cormorant, Jonesboro and Olive Branch to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Jaguars will have a stiff test this Friday on the road at No. 5 Grenada. With the No. 9 offense and No. 5 defense in Mississippi, the Chargers have jumped out to a 4-1 record with ranked wins over Oxford and Clinton. Their only loss came at the start of the year to No. 7 Oak Grove. Grenada beat DeSoto Central 14-13 last year.

No. 12 West Jones at No. 10 Jackson Prep — Friday, Oct. 4
A battle of unbeatens, West Jones and Jackson Prep come into this week with a combined 11 wins. West Jones beat a previously ranked Poplarville 10-7 last week, while Jackson handled Evangelical Christian 35-0. Jackson’s top-15 offense is anchored by Baylor commit Matthew Parker and Duke pledge Cole Allen along the offensive line. West Jones won this game last year 21-6.

No. 17 Picayune Memorial at No. 21 Petal — Friday, Oct. 4
After stumbling against top-15 Gulfport two weeks ago, Picayune bounced back last week with a 38-35 win over No. 24 Ocean Springs. The Maroon Tide will look to keep that momentum rolling this Friday at No. 21 Petal. The Panthers are 4-1 having won four straight since the opener against No. 9 Hattiesburg. These two teams last played in 2014 — a 40-35 Picayune win.
