The Mississippi high school football rankings have updated heading into the second week of October.
There is a new No. 1 team in the Magnolia State with Tupelo taking the crown after a 35-14 win over West Point. Jackson Prep landed its first signature win of the season last week and Picayune snuck past a ranked Petal.

Below are the updated top 25 teams in the Mississippi On3 Massey Ratings, as of Oct. 7.
1. Tupelo (+2)
Tupelo took over the No. 1 spot in Mississippi after beating West Point 35-14. The Golden Wave earned the crown for the first time this year just in time to take on No. 3 Madison Central at home on Friday in the Magnolia State game of the week. Tupelo is a 2-point favorite, per the On3 Massey Ratings.
2. Brandon
Brandon held steady at No. 2 after sitting at home over the weekend. The Bulldogs had the chance to rest after smashing a ranked Gulfport 42-0 two weeks ago. They will be back in action this Friday on the road at No. 22 Petal.
3. Madison Central (-2)
Madison Central tumbled out of the No. 1 spot this weekend after sitting idle off of a win over No. 15 Warren Central on Sept. 27. The Jaguars are preparing for a road showdown at top-ranked Tupelo this Friday. The Jags have the No. 10 offense and best defense in the state.
4. Starkville
Starkville improved to 5-1 over the weekend with a 35-0 win over Greenwood. The Yellowjackets’ lone loss of the year came in a 42-41 thriller on the road at No. 11 Louisville in late September. They will host No. 14 Germantown this weekend as 22-point favorites.
5. Grenada
Grenada knocked DeSoto Central out of the Mississippi top 25 last Friday with a 35-7 win. It was the Chargers’ third ranked win of the season, joining victories against Oxford and Clinton. On deck is Lake Cormorant.
6. Jackson Prep (+4)
Heading into last week, Jackson Prep had yet to play a ranked en route to a 6-0 record. That changed on Friday when the Patriots thrashed then-No. 12 West Jones 42-7. That win has seen Jackson Prep jump four spots in the rankings ahead of its game against Presbyterian Christian this week. The Pats have the No. 12 offense and No. 5 defense in Mississippi.
7. Hartfield Academy (+2)
Hartfield beat Oak Forest 56-6 over the weekend to improve to 7-0 on the year ahead of its major clash with No. 8 Madison-Ridgeland this Friday. The Hawks are currently 1-point road favorites. A win would be their first against a ranked opponent this season.

8. Madison-Ridgeland Academy (-2)
Madison-Ridgeland fell two spots despite a 44-14 win over East Ranking on Friday. The Patriots are 5-1, their lone loss coming to Pulaski Academy (ARk.) on Sept. 6. They bounced back from that loss with a 51-13 blowout win against No. 9 Oak Grove. Madison-Ridgeland will get another shot to add to its resume this week when it takes on No. 7 Hartfield.
9. Oak Grove (-2)
Oak Grove was idle last week after bouncing back against Laurel 45-7 the week prior. The Warriors have lost to No. 10 Hattiesburg and No. 8 Madison-Ridgeland this season while picking up wins over No. 23 Ocean Springs, No. 5 Grenada and Laurel. This week, they will host No. 24 Meridian as huge favorites.
10. Hattiesburg (-2)
Hattiesburg is a perfect 6-0 on the year with signature wins over No. 22 Petal and No. 9 Oak Grove. Last week, the Tigers slammed George County and Auburn quarterback commit Deuce Knight by a 48-21 final score. Hattiesburg is off this week and will be back in action on Oct. 18 against Forest Hill.
