National HSFB Top 25

The 2024 football season is officially at least three weeks deep in each state across the country. The national high school football rankings continue to shift as September nears its end, too.

Texas continues to make up a bulk of the On3 Massey Ratings national top 25, as 11 Lone Star State programs are featured in this week’s rankings, including six of the top 10. Mater Dei (Calif.) continues to hold the top spot and is one of five California programs in the mix.

Ahead of the fourth and final weekend of games in September, here’s a look at the updated national top 25:

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Mater Dei (Calif.)

Previous Rank: No. 1
Offense didn’t come as easy as normal for Mater Dei last week, but it relied on its defense for a 25-14 win over Baltimore St. Frances Academy to improve to 4-0. The top-ranked Monarchs now have three wins over national top-30 programs, including No. 9 Bishop Gorman and No. 15 Centennial. Per the Massey Ratings, the No. 1 defense and No. 3 offense in the nation resides in Santa Ana. Mater Dei is idle this week and will return to action on Oct. 4 at Santa Margarita Catholic, a top-10 team in California.

2. Duncanville (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 3 (+1)
After surviving at home two weeks ago in a close win over St. Frances Academy, Duncanville found a much more comfortable win over the weekend, downing Waxahachie 41-17. Now 3-0, the Panthers look as advertised on the offensive side of the ball, led by Alabama QB commit Keelon Russell and Oregon WR commit Dakorien Moore. Up next is a road test at Dallas Skyline.

3. St. John Bosco (Calif.)

Previous Rank: No. 2 (-1)
St. John Bosco is now 5-0 on the season following a 35-14 win at home over Pittsburg. The Braves now have two wins against out-of-state competition, as well as a trio of victories over ranked programs in California. They’re also idle this week and are set to return for a major Golden State tilt against Orange Lutheran in Bellflower on Oct. 4. Bosco has the nation’s No. 4 offense and No. 4 defense, per the Massey Ratings.

4. Atascocita (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 6 (+2)
An impressive 3-0 start to the season led Atascocita into a bye last week and it now enters the final weekend of the month as the No. 2 team in the state of Texas. The Eagles recently triumphed over nationally-ranked Westlake by 18 points, an outing that followed up a 17-point win on the road over Katy. With one of the nation’s top offenses, Atascocita gets back on the horse this week and will welcome C.E. King to Humble on Thursday.

5. North Shore (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 5
North Shore is also coming off a bye week following a 3-0 beginning to the 2024 campaign. The Mustangs have held opponents to 16 total points across the trio of victories and have scored 113 points. The Houston program has a very favorable schedule and is given a 99 percent win probability in each of its next four games, beginning with a Thursday-night clash against Humble this week.

6. Southlake Carroll (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 4 (-2)
Wins have not come as easy for Southlake Carroll thus far, but the Dragons possess a potent offense and find themselves at 4-0 following a 56-48 win on the road over Trinity last weekend. Through the first four games of the season, the Dragons are averaging 49 points per game. They’ll face a fellow undefeated Texas program in Keller Timber Creek this Friday.

7. North Crowley (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 8 (+1)
North Crowley’s upset win over DeSoto on Sept. 6 has proven to be no fluke, as the Panthers continue to emerge as one of the biggest surprises in the nation so far this season. A 70-17 stomping of Rockwall on the road over the weekend improved the Fort Worth program to 4-0. The Panthers are now set to host 0-4 Mansfield Legacy on Friday.

8. DeSoto (Texas)

Previous Rank: No. 9 (+1)
DeSoto’s offense ranks No. 1 in the nation, per the On3 Massey Ratings. The 3-1 Eagles are averaging a whopping 62.25 points per game and have now scored 70-plus points twice this season following a staggering 71-0 shutout of Mesquite last week. They’ll now head to Waxahachie this week as a monumental clash against No. 2 Duncanville awaits on Oct. 11.

9. Bishop Gorman (Nev.)

Previous Rank: No. 7 (-2)
Now through the stout beginning of their 2024 schedule, Bishop Gorman will look to settle into in-state action this week with a trip to Henderson to take on Liberty, the No. 3 team in Nevada. The 3-1 Gaels were unable to take down Mater Dei earlier this month, but they still have multiple impressive wins under their belt already, including a recent 55-28 win over Orange Lutheran, California’s No. 6 team.

10. IMG Academy (Fla.)

Previous Rank: No. 10
IMG remains the top-ranked team in Florida and is now 2-0 against in-state competition following an easy 49-6 win over Jacksonville Mandarin last weekend. The Ascenders’ deep roster has rebounded very well from its season-opening loss to Corner Canyon and now sits at 4-1 overall. Another nationally-ranked matchup on the road awaits this week, as IMG heads to Phenix City on Friday to take on the Central Red Devils, the No. 1 team in Alabama and the No. 22 team in the nation.
