New York High School Football Rankings: Top 25 teams - Oct. 6
Week six of the 2024 New York high school football season is in the books and there’s once again been movement in the On3 Massey Ratings top 25.
Garden City has moved into the top five, while Buffalo Canisius has cracked the top 10. Iona Prep and Cardinal Hayes continue to occupy the No. 1 and 2 spots heading into the second weekend of October.
Below are the full top 25 rankings in the state of New York heading into the second half of the season.
The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Iona Prep
Previous: No. 1
Defense was optional over the weekend in New Rochelle as top-ranked Iona Prep managed to survive in a 48-40 shootout win over No. 10 St. Anthony’s. The Gaels have now scored 40-plus points three times this season and are now riding a three-game winning streak. The clash of the season is set for this Friday as Iona heads to No. 2 Cardinal Hayes.
2. Cardinal Hayes
Previous: No. 2
Cardinal Hayes improved to 5-1 this weekend with a 27-7 win on the road over Kellenburg Memorial. The Cardinals have now allowed just 22 points in their last three outings and look to be in form ahead of the big matchup at home against No. 1 Iona Prep this Friday. The Massey Ratings predict a 35-27 win for the visiting Gaels.
3. Somers
Previous: No. 4 (+1)
The Tuskers are now 5-0 following a shutout of Cross River John Jay. While the competition hasn’t been stout, Somers has been excellent on the offensive side of the ball and has a clear path to an undefeated 2024 campaign. It’s set to return to action in a week on Sunday, Oct. 13 against the Harrison Huskies.
4. Albany Christian Brothers Academy
Previous: No. 5 (+1)
Christian Brothers Academy continues to brutalize opposing defenses this season. The Brothers have now put up 70-plus points twice this season after shutting out Schenectady 75-0 over the weekend and now have the No. 7 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Now 5-0 this season, they face a short week and will return to the field on Thursday against 3-2 Niskayuna.
5. Garden City
Previous: No. 6 (+1)
The Trojans’ defense, which ranks No. 1 in the state per the Massey Ratings, picked up their second shutout of the season this weekend, blanking W Tresper Clarke 52-0. Garden City has allowed just 23 points in its first five games of the season. It is set to host South Side on Thursday evening and is favored to win each of its remaining games this month.
6. Shaker
Previous: No. 7 (+1)
Not to be outdone, Shaker also possesses a potent offense that is now averaging 43.8 points per game, as well as a legitimate defense that is now allowing just 7 points per game. The Bison crushed Albany 67-8 on Friday and haven’t allowed double-digit points in a game since Sept. 13. They now hit the road and will take on Averill Park this Thursday.
7. Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy
Previous: No. 9 (+2)
The other top Christian Brothers Academy improved to 4-0 this week with a 42-10 victory on the road over Liverpool. The Brothers have a top-five offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings, and have scored 164 points in their last three games. They are now idle this coming week and will return to action on Oct. 18 against West Genesee Senior.

8. Hamburg St. Francis
Previous: No. 3 (-5)
The Red Raiders’ topsy-turvy season continued this weekend as they couldn’t overcome Buffalo Canisius in a 48-34 defeat. Now 2-3 on the season, St. Francis is looking for some sort of consistency in the back half of the campaign — which begins this weekend with a bounce back opportunity at home against Brooklyn St Joseph.
9. Canisius
Previous: No. 12 (+3)
Canisius’ 12-point win over St. Francis was its biggest of the season, ushering it into the top 10 of the state rankings. The Crusaders seem to have righted the ship following a two-game losing streak last month and will now look to extend their winning streak to three games this Friday when they head to Bishop Timon-St. Jude.
10. Melville St. Anthony’s
Previous: No. 8 (-2)
The Friars’ offense now ranks No. 2 in the state, per the Massey Ratings, as they took top-ranked Iona Prep to the wire in a 48-40 loss. St. Anthony’s is now 3-4 on the season, with three of the losses being by just one score. It is now set to begin a two-game home stand, starting with a matchup against Xavier this Friday.
