New York High School Football

Seasons are underway across the Empire State, and the New York high school football rankings have fluctuated heavily following a big week of games.

Three programs have jumped into the top 10, while six teams have entered the On3 Massey Ratings New York top 25. St. Francis and Canisius are each now in the top five heading into the second weekend of September.

Below are the updated top 25 teams in the state of New York, as of Sept. 9.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Iona Prep

Previous Ranking: No. 1
The Gaels rebounded nicely from a season-opening defeat, rolling past Springfield Central (Mass.) for a 44-20 win on the road last week. Junior quarterback Julian Guzman threw for three touchdowns and also rushed for a score in the win. The tough tests around the Northeast keep on coming, as Iona now gears up for a big-time matchup at home on Saturday night against Bergen Catholic, the No. 1 team in New Jersey.

2. Cardinal Hayes

Previous Ranking: No. 2
Like Iona, Cardinal Hayes also picked up its first win of the season over in Massachusetts, bouncing Catholic Memorial for a 36-29 victory. Syracuse QB commit Rich Belin totaled four touchdowns in the win — two through the air and two on the ground. The Cardinals will look to improve to 2-0 on Friday when they host DePaul Catholic, the No. 3 team in New Jersey.

3. St. Francis

Previous Ranking: No. 7 (+4)
The Red Raiders made a splash in Ohio last week, besting Cleveland Benedictine for a hard-nosed 23-17 win. Now No. 3 in New York, St. Francis will look to make it 2-0 against the Buckeye State this weekend when they take on Ironton on Saturday. The Fighting Tigers are the No. 34 team in Ohio.

4. Somers

Previous Ranking: No. 3 (-1)
Defending state champions Somers had to survive at home last week, escaping with a 40-35 win over Ramapo (N.J.). The Tuskers nearly blew a big lead in the second half but moved to 1-0 and will now prepare for a ranked in-state matchup against No. 22 Yorktown on Friday night. Somers currently has a 90% win probability, per the Massey Ratings.

5. Canisius

Previous Ranking: No. 15 (+10)
Sophomore athlete Elijah Kimble collected four touchdowns, including a kickoff return score, to propel Canisius to a 14-point win on the road over Scranton Prep (Pa.) last week. The Crusaders’ offense looked the part and will now be put to an even tougher test in the coming days, as they’ll head to Ohio to take on Washington, a top-150 program nationally and the No. 4 team in the Buckeye State.

6. Garden City

Previous Ranking: No. 8 (+2)
The Trojans marched to a 42-0 shutout on the road over Bethpage Senior to open the 2024 season while also setting a Long Island record. Garden City has now won 43 in a row and is heavily favored to run the table once again this fall. This Saturday, it will look to make it 44 consecutive victories when Floral Park Memorial comes to town.

7. Farmingdale Senior

Previous Ranking: No. 6 (-1)
The Dalers check in with the No. 10 offense and No. 3 defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Farmington is scheduled to take on Westbury this Friday. A Sept. 28 matchup at ranked Massapequa looms large.
