Ohio High School Football Games of the Week: August 29-31

Ohio high school football opened up the 2024 regular season last weekend with a slate chock-full of upsets around the Buckeye State top 25.

This week features a pair of top-25 clashes, while St. Edward and Archbishop Hoban take on elite out-of-state opponents.

Below are the Ohio high school football games of the week.

Top high school football games in Ohio

Toledo Whitmer at #4 Toledo Central CatholicFriday, Aug. 30
Toledo Central Catholic beat Findlay 54-21 after Findlay QB and Georgia commit Ryan Montgomery went down with an ACL injury four minutes into the game. Irish quarterback Isaiah Fox was 13-of-15 for 171 yards and two touchdowns before halftime. He finished 16-of-19 for 211. Whitmer hammered Dublin Coffman 42-14 after jumping out to a 21-0 first-half lead. This game features a pair of Ohio State targets: elite Buckeyes offensive tackle commit Carter Lowe for Whitmer and top-100 uncommitted junior cornerback Victor Singleton for Central Catholic.

Hamilton at #5 Lakota West — Friday, Aug. 30
Lakota West took down St. Xavier 17-14 in last week’s game of the week. Firebirds quarterback Sam Wiles picked up one touchdown on the ground and one through the air. Hamilton shut out crosstown GCL opponent Badin 15-0, ending the Rams’ 38-game regular season win streak. Hamilton’s Gracen Goldsmith scored both touchdowns for the Big Blue, also picking up 95 yards on the ground.

#22 Canton McKinley at #6 Avon — Friday, Aug. 30
Avon faced a big showdown against St. Ignatius last week and came away with the 42-21 win at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Avon dominated in the trenches, rushing for 230 yards and five scores on the ground. Kent State quarterback commit Nolan Good was 14-of-22 passing in his first game back for the Eagles after missing the last two playoff games of 2023 due to injury. McKinley beat Warren G. Harding 26-19 behind 164 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries from senior running back Nino Hill.

Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) at #8 Archbishop Hoban — Friday, Aug. 30
Archbishop Hoban fell to Archbishop Spalding (Md.) and Maryland quarterback commit Malik Washington 28-14 last week. Several Power 4 prospects litter the Knights’ roster, including Ohio State linebacker commit Eli Lee, and blue-chip juniors Elbert Hill, Sam Greer and Payton Cook. Don Bosco’s roster is headlined by Northwestern commit Marquet Dorsey Jr.

#14 Glenville at #18 Olentangy Liberty — Friday, Aug. 30
Glenville went on the road and pulled off an upset over then-ranked Upper Arlington in a 6-0 defensive battle. The Tarblooders’ lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard punt return by Jaylen Edwards. Ted Ginn Sr.’s squad is the defending Division IV state champion and has been a talent pipeline for Ohio State for the last two decades. Junior linebacker Cincere Johnson is a top-150 prospect in the 2026 class. Olentangy Liberty shut out Olentangy 28-0 in week one with an impressive performance from senior receiver Christian Moulton, who accounted for 111 yards and a touchdown on just two receptions.

St. Joseph’s Prep School (Pa.) at #1 St. Edward — Saturday, Aug. 31
Three-time defending state champion St. Edward went on the road to Columbus last week, shutting out Pickerington North 28-0. Senior quarterback Thomas Csanyi threw three touchdowns of 39, 31 and 40 yards. Pickerington North picked off Csanyi four times, but could not do anything against the stout Eagles defense. St. Joseph’s has won six state titles since 2016, and the Hawks have produced players like former Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. and Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord. Current stars for the Hawks include Ohio State commits Maxwell Roy and Isaiah West.
