Avon and Olentangy Liberty won top-25 matchups in week two while St. Edward knocked off Pennsylvania’s St. Joseph’s Prep School. The Ohio high school football games of the week for Sept. 5-7 should prove to be just as exciting.

Massillon Washington hosts the top team in New Jersey while Lakota West takes on Princeton and Avon faces Glenville in a pair of top-25 games.

Top high school football games in Ohio

Bergen Catholic (N.J.) at #2 Massillon Washington — Friday, Sept. 6
Massillon Washington went on the road and shut out GlenOak 45-0 last week to move to 2-0 on the season. Quarterback Jalen Slaughter and running back Ja’Meir Gamble both accounted for two touchdowns each. Bergen Catholic fell to IMG Academy 27-14. IMG’s SMU quarterback commit Ty Hawkins broke a 7-7 tie in the third quarter with a 51-yard touchdown run before finding freshman wide receiver Eric McFarland for a 45-yard strike on the next drive.

#4 Toledo Central Catholic at Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) — Friday, Sept. 6
A Toledo crosstown showdown between the Irish and Toledo Whitmer ended in a 27-17 win for Central Catholic. Senior running back Tyler Morgan ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, extending Central Catholic’s winning streak to 33 games. Junior running back Anthony Sylvester ran for another 105 yards and a score on 20 attempts. No. 14 Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) smacked Dearborn 56-12 on the road last week. Toledo Central Catholic won last year’s game against Detroit Catholic Central 42-21 at home.

#5 Lakota West at #17 Princeton — Friday, Sept. 6
A week after its big win over St. Xavier, Lakota West shut out a solid Hamilton squad 31-0 behind a four-touchdown performance from Sam Wiles — two through the air and two on the ground. The Firebirds held Hamilton to just over 100 yards of total offense. Princeton improved to 1-1 with a shutout 52-0 win over Sycamore. The Vikings defense held Sycamore to just 90 yards of total offense. Princeton and Lakota West spilt its season series in 2023 — Princeton winning the regular season matchup 18-3 and the Firebirds taking the playoff rematch 19-7.

#25 Glenville at #7 Avon — Friday, Sept. 6
After a season-opening win over Upper Arlington, Glenville 24-13 to Olentangy Liberty last Friday. Quarterback Arvell Nelson threw a pair of touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Patriots. Avon hosted then-No. 22 Canton McKinley last Friday and scraped away a 21-14 win against the Bulldogs. The Eagles turned the ball over three times and committed 13 penalties, but the defense produced seven sacks — including on McKinley’s final drive following a successful onside kick. Avon won last year’s matchup with Glenville 24-16.

Cathedral (Ind.) at #12 St. Xavier — Friday, Sept. 6
St. Xavier took down Centerville 34-10 last Friday behind a nearly 200-yard combined passing and rushing performance from Chase Herbstreit. Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.) is the No. 3 team in Indiana and fell 30-14 to top-ranked Brownsburg (Ind.) a week ago. These two squads last faced off in 2020 when Cathedral won 25-22 at home.
