As of Sept. 17, 2024, only a handful of 3-0 teams made it to the Oregon On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list. None are in the top ten because the better teams in Oregon high school football have played fewer games.

However, the rankings have stayed the same after three weeks of football this year, as shown in the last update. Here’s where the best teams in the state are three days before another round of games occurs.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. West Linn

Previous: No. 1
The Lions solidified their claim as the state’s best offensive and defensive team after shutting down seventh-rank Sherwood 35-0. West Linn finished the game with 324 yards on offense, split evenly between passing and rushing yards. Baird Gilroy had 162 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Viggo Anderson had 149 rushing yards against the Bowmen. The Lions could improve to 3-0 with a victory over Sumner, Washington’s fourth-ranked team, on Sept. 20.

2. Central Catholic

Previous: No. 2
The reigning Class 6A Oregon High School Football champions dominated their Central Catholic counterparts from Modesto, California, 45-29. The Rams have been excellent in their first two non-league games, earning the state’s second-best ranking on offense and defense. Those performances will give them momentum when they face Sam Barlow on Sept. 20 and Clackamas on Sept. 26.

3. Tualatin

Previous: No. 3
The Timberwolves have outscored its first two opponents this season, 120-41. Their latest victory was a 66-22 demolition of South Salem. However, after dominating the Saxons and the Jesuit Crusaders in their first two games, Tualatin will face another tough test against seventh-ranked Sherwood on Sept. 20.

4. Sheldon

Previous: No. 4
The Irish have surrendered only 16 points in their first two games. In their last match, Sheldon limited West Salem to only three points, which the Titans scored in the fourth quarter. Mana Tuioti led the way for the Irish with 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Kelsen Sperry also had a couple of touchdowns from 33 rushing yards. Sheldon heads to their Sept. 20 clash with North Medford, wherein a 3-0 start is at stake.

5. Lake Oswego

Previous: No. 5
After defeating 18th-ranked Sunset, the Lakers completed another dominant performance against tenth-ranked Silverton, 42-13. Hudson Kurland dissected the Foxes’ defense with 194 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Lamarcus Bell pounded the ground with 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Lake Oswego will face Newberg Senior on Sept. 20, serving as a warmup for their Oct. 4 showdown with Tualatin.

6. Lakeridge

Previous: No. 6
The Pacers haven’t given up a touchdown in two games, limiting Jefferson and Sam Barlow to five points. The Bruins never had a chance, as Lakeridge quarterback Drew Weller had 159 passing yards and three touchdowns. Ansu Sanoe also left Sam Barlow’s defenders behind, leading to 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Likewise, Jayden Tragesser had 57 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Their dominance on both ends could give 14th-ranked Mountainside some problems when they compete on the 20th.

7. Sherwood

Previous: No. 7
The Bowmen have been on both sides of football results. After riding high via a 42-7 victory over Roosevelt, top-ranked West Linn blanked them in their second game. While Sherwood had 153 rushing yards in the loss, they won’t win by having only eight passing yards. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any easier for the Bowmen because they will face third-ranked Tualatin in their next game.

8. Jesuit

Previous: No. 8
The Crusaders erased their 54-19 loss to Tualatin by defeating Tigard 42-21. Jesuit generated 452 yards on offense and converted eight out of 11 third-down attempts against the Tigers. Those numbers negated the three interceptions they gave to Tigard. Jesuit can make it two wins in a row by defeating Oregon City on Sept. 20.

9. Wilsonville

Previous: No. 9
After a nail-biting victory against Nelson High School, the Wildcats had a more convincing win versus Summit. Wilsonville could have blanked the Storm without the touchdown they surrendered in the third quarter. Mark Wiepert was on fire, finishing with 384 passing yards and three touchdowns. Nick Crowley had 176 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Mark Wiepert had 76 rushing yards and a score. Wilsonville will aim for a 3-0 record against Sunset on the 20th.

10. Silverton

Previous: No. 10
The Foxes suffered their first setback this season via a humbling defeat against Lake Oswego. That loss dropped their offensive ranking to 11th and defensive ranking to 16th. Silverton can return to the win column against West Albany and McKay in their next two games.
