Over the last week, Southern California — especially the community of Pacific Palisades — has suffered from devastating wildfires that began last Tuesday. Thousands have lost their homes as firefighters continue to work to contain the fires.

The Pacific Palisades has been entirely displaced amid the fires, but that has not kept Palisades Charter High School basketball players from wanting to get back together on the court. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, they will get the chance to do just that this week at nearby schools.

The Dolphins’ girls basketball team will begin practice Tuesday at Brentwood School while the boys basketball squad will start Monday at Memorial Park in Santa Monica.

Palisades’ girls basketball coach, Adam Levine, told SI: “Over 40 coaches from other programs reached out asking how they can help out. We are overwhelmed by the support of the basketball community.”

Mira Costa, Culver City, Ventura, Rolling Hills Prep, El Camino Real, Viewpoint, Burbank/Burroughs, Campbell Hall and others were just some of the schools that reportedly offered gym time or donations. According to Levine, even schools as far away as Lake Washington in Kirkland, Washington had offered help.

Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement Sunday announcing the reopening of most LAUSD schools on Monday, Jan. 13.

Palisades boys basketball is 14 games into its season with a 9-5 record. The Dolphins were originally scheduled to play Los Angeles Venice on Jan. 8. Los Angeles CES was on the schedule for Monday evening, but SI reports that LAUSD athletics will not resume until Jan. 15.

The Dolphins’ girls basketball team is 12 games into the 2024-25 season with a 6-6 record. They have hit a three-game win streak with victories over Oaks Christian, Chatsworth and University. The Palisades girls team also had games scheduled for Jan. 8, 13-15.
