Son of LeBron James' high school basketball coach takes over Loyola High's program
The California high school basketball scene welcomes a new coach in Cameron Joyce. He is the son of Dru Joyce II, LeBron James’ high school basketball coach at Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary. While the older Joyce is still coaching the Fighting Irish, his son will take his talents to the West Coast.
Before taking over Loyola High’s basketball program, Cameron Joyce was the head coach at St. Ignatius High in Cleveland. In 2019, he became the Wildcats’ first African American head coach and led the team to a 15-9 record.
In his last two seasons, Joyce led St. Ignatius to a 48-8 record and an Ohio high school basketball Division 1 state championship. Meanwhile, the Wildcats went 22-5 last year, making them the 55th best team in the country based on the On3 Composite Team Rankings.
Before coaching St. Ignatius, the younger Joyce was the Ohio State men’s basketball Director of Operations. He also had administrative and coaching stints with the University of Florida and Northwood University.

Cameron Joyce played high school basketball for his father at St. Vincent-St. Mary. During his time with the Fighting Irish, he helped the team win three district championships and a regional title. As a player, Joyce was integral to the Fighting Irish’s state tournament semifinal run.
Joyce will take over a high school basketball program that finished with an 18-11 record last season. Under Damaine Powell’s mentorship, the Cubs had a 72-46 record in four seasons. Likewise, Joyce and the Cubs are competing in the Mission League against some of the nation’s top teams. His coaching prowess will be put to the test against squads like Harvard-Westlake, the third-best team in the country according to the On3 Composite.
Also competing in the Mission League are the Notre Dame Knights (20th best in the nation) and Sierra Canyon (21st in the country). Meanwhile, Cameron Joyce’s brother, Dru Joyce III, is the current Duquesne University men’s basketball head coach.
