Why does South Carolina High School Football Class AAAAA have two divisions?

In April 2024, the South Carolina High School League executive committee voted to split Class AAAAA into two divisions for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This decision meant having different Divisions 1 and 2 champions for all sports, including football.

The 28 largest schools comprised Class AAAAA’s Division 1, while the remaining 26 compete in Division 2. Before this development, Class AAAA had two divisions. However, AAAAA’s creation reverted Class AAAA to a single division.
