The South Carolina On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 list as of Oct. 14 features some shakeups as four of the top ten teams switch places. Meanwhile, four swaps among the South Carolina high school football teams ranked from 11 to 25 occurred, including one squad that moved up to enter the list. Here’s how the state’s best teams fared after the action during the second weekend of October.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, two teams from South Carolina rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Dutch Fork

The Foxes solidified their claim as South Carolina’s best defensive team after completing their fourth shutout victory this season. In addition to keeping White Knoll off the board, Maurice Anderson and Ethan Offing combined for 136 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Dutch Fork’s defense finished with 61 tackles (four for losses) and an interception. Those stats helped South Carolina’s top-ranked team improve their points allowed per game to an astonishing 2.83. The 24th-best team in the nation can extend their undefeated run to seven games by defeating Lexington on Oct. 18.

2. Northwestern

The Trojans have dominated all opponents after their one-point season-opening win against William Amos Hough, North Carolina’s second-best team. Since then, their average margin of victory has been 37.42 points per game, and their 65-6 demolition of Fort Mill has improved that average.

The state’s top-ranked offense got significant contributions from Zymier Gordon-Miles, who finished with 190 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Rock Hill will be challenged to slow down the offense of the country’s 26th-best team during their Oct. 18 encounter.

3. Gaffney

The Indians remain undefeated in overtime after edging James F. Byrnes 15-9. The game was so intense that two extensions were needed to settle the final count. Jamarcus Smith led Gaffney with 132 rushing yards and a touchdown.

However, while the Indians improved to 5-0 after that win, their penalties against the Rebels are a cause for concern. They’re lucky to escape with a victory despite their 12 infractions for 119 yards. Therefore, Gaffney must clean up their act against Riverside to avoid pulling off a win after regulation.

4. Irmo

The Yellow Jackets earned their seventh victory in the 2024 South Carolina high school football season against River Bluff 35-14. The Gators cannot contain Aaron Brand Jr., who finished the contest with 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Amire White also had a solid game, tallying 126 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Leek Miller and Kyle Mitchell added a touchdown each for Irmo, a team that hasn’t scored fewer than 34 points this season. They can improve their record by completing a road victory against 15th-ranked White Knoll this week.

5. Westside

The Rams remain undefeated after five games by unleashing a dominant performance against Emerald. Through five games, Westside has the state’s third-best offense, as proven by the fact that they haven’t scored under 30 points in any game.

The good part about the Rams’ schedule is they have a shot at completing a perfect regular season. Wren, South Carolina high school football’s 26th-ranked squad, is their most formidable challenger through their next four games, giving them a path to a 9-0 record.

6. Spartanburg (+1)

The Vikings didn’t score as much as their output against Broome and Eastside. However, their 23 points were still enough to secure a win against 20th-ranked Dorman. While that victory improved their record to 4-1, they are not out of the woods yet.

Waiting in the wings for Spartanburg is 19th-ranked Boiling Springs. A week later, they will welcome 17th-ranked Byrnes. Those two teams can make it challenging for the Vikings to secure more victories that can improve their playoff aspirations.

7. Summerville (-1)

While the Green Wave dropped by one spot, they earned their first shutout victory this season against James Island Charter. Jayven Williams scored all four Summerville touchdowns through runs of ten, 45, 55, and 15 yards.

After scoring 103 points in their last two games, the Green Wave’s offense ranks sixth among South Carolina high school football teams. That firepower should be on display in their succeeding home game against Ashley Ridge on the 18th.

8. South Pointe (+1)

The Stallions have completed back-to-back shutouts after keeping York Comprehensive off the scoreboard. A week before, they displayed the same dominance versus Camden. Against the Cougars, Mason Pickett-Hicks paced South Pointe with 12 carries for 239 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

J’zavier Currence had two receiving touchdowns, while Tacarean Douglas added 101 rushing yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, South Pointe’s relentless defense generated 21 tackles for losses and 10.5 sacks. The Stallions can earn their fourth straight victory against Lancaster on the 18th.

9. Sumter (-1)

Though the Gamecocks’ rankings decreased by one spot, they maintained their perfect record after scoring a season-high 63 points against West Florence. Sumter punished the Knights on the ground, as Kameron Fortune, John Peeples, and Franklin Richardson combined for 461 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Anthony Addison generated a touchdown off a fumble recovery. With the momentum going their way, Sumter can run off the table by applying the same offensive intensity against Blythewood, Westwood, and Ridge View.

10. JL Mann

Save for their overtime loss to Gaffney, the Patriots’ season has been going smoothly. In their last two games, they dominated Easley 55-6 and shut down Hillcrest 31-0. It’s J. L. Mann’s second shutout victory this season and the first against a team within their region.

Ladainnian Martin had 99 rushing yards, 66 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Na’cyus Morrison and Keyshun Henderson each added a touchdown. After that one-sided game, a more formidable challenge awaits the Patriots as they face 14th-ranked T. L. Hanna.
