On3.com

High school football is kicked off in the state of Tennessee. Several top teams across it got their seasons going with many picking up opening wins on Friday night and even into the weekend.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

The Preseason Top-25 for the state came out earlier in the month. Now, below is the updated Tennessee On3 Massey Ratings Top-25 as of August 26th, 2024.

1. Baylor School

Previous Ranking: 3
The Baylor School, the new top-ranked team in the state of Tennessee, won 21-14 over Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (GA) in a nationally televised opening game on ESPN on Sunday. They scored 21 unanswered to secure the comeback win over the Eagles. A duo committed to the Southeastern Conference in RB Shekai Mills-Knight (Ole Miss) and WR Joakim Dodson (Tennessee) scored the tying and winning touchdowns that both came from over 50-plus yards out. They then closed it out defensively with four turnovers forced on their opponents’ final six possessions.

2. Oakland

Previous Ranking: 2
The Oakland Patriots, who are on a run of four consecutive berths, including three wins, in the 6A State Title, opened their season with a 35-0 shutout over the Independence Eagles on Friday. They handled their business on both sides of the ball. Their offense posted 358 yards at 9.7 per play en route to six touchdowns with two apiece from Tamari Hill and Craig Tutt on the ground and two more in passing from QB Kyler Creasy. They then held their opposition to just 57 yards a half with a pair of picks from Kyrie Gainor.

3. McCallie School

Previous Ranking: 1
The McCallie School, the defending TSSAA DII-AAA State Champions after a victory over Baylor School, started its season with a 41-3 blowout of the Chattanooga Christian School. RB Keylan Syam posted 135 yards and a trio of touchdowns in the victory. It was a big win for the Blue Tornado in their first game under their new head coach in Joel Bradford.

4. Christ Presbyterian Academy

Previous Ranking: 8
Christ Presbyterian Academy played a Top-25 matchup against an opponent down the street and won it in a 31-24 victory over Brentwood Academy. CPA managed to come back late with LB Preston Patterson sealing it with an interception off of the state’s top-ranked prospect and a top quarterback in his class in George McIntyre (Tennessee). RB Rawls Patterson also had over 150 all-purpose yards along with a touchdown.

5. Houston

Previous Ranking: 6
Houston had an opening blowout as well with a 45-3 victory over Briarcrest Christian on Friday. The reigning Class 6A champions continued to pour it on in the second half including at least three rushing scores combined for Chandler Day and for Canon Day to close it out.

6. Maryville

Previous Ranking: 5
Maryville is the only team at 2-0 in the Top-10 following their second straight shutout with this being a massive one at 51-0 over Heritage. QB Will Jones threw four touchdowns in the opening half while their defense forced three turnovers and a safety to be up 37-0 at the break. That enabled the running clock to begin with two more scores pushing the margin past 50 for the Rebels.

7. Montgomery Bell Academy

Previous Ranking: 7
Montgomery Bell Academy won 20-18 in the final seconds against another one of the best teams in Nashville in Pearl-Cohn. After a low-scoring first half and having a freshman quarterback come in to help them in Charlie Verner, Ronit Chandra knocked in a 53-yard field goal to give the Big Red the first win for anyone over the Firebirds in two seasons after they went 15-0 last fall.

8. Ravenwood

Previous Ranking: 18
Ravenwood went to Alcoa, a near decade-long defending state champion in Class 3A, and brought home a 27-17 upset win on Friday. That justified the second-biggest jump in this week’s rating with the Raptors up 10 spots. They had a two-quarterback system going in this one with Maverick Chance leading them with 73 rushing yards for three touchdowns while completing two passes for 64 yards along with Femi Babalola also contributing with three completions for 101 yards and another score.

9. Brentwood

Previous Ranking: 14
Brentwood, who jumped five spots as well, handed Blackman their second loss of the season already with a 24-14 win for the Bruins. They were down 14-3 early against the Blaze but took a 17-14 lead after a touchdown from RB Gavyn Nelson. Jackson Allen would then seal it with a 92-yard pick-six to get the opening win for Brentwood.

10. Germantown

Previous Ranking: 12
Germantown rounds out the Top-10 after starting at No. 13 following a 50-0 shutout of Raleigh-Egypt. The Red Devil run game led the way in the massive margin on Friday. They’ll now prepare for a difficult matchup later this week against South Panola, a Top-15 team currently out of Mississippi.
