Duncanville (Texas) tops New York's Christ the King in Hoophall consolation game
Fresh off a close loss in its first game at the Hoophall West Classic, Duncanville (Texas) responded with a big win by beating New York powerhouse Christ the King 75-70 on Friday morning.
The Panthers, who dropped a three-point loss to De La Salle (Calif.) on Thursday, didn’t let one loss turn into a losing skid and moved to 9-5 before they return back to the Lone Star State to continue district play.
TCU signee Kayden Edwards led the way with 27 points, five rebounds and two assists while hitting 8 of 18 attempts from the field. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers as well and also finished a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Three other Panthers players finished in double figures, with Christopher Hunt (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Cam Smith (14 points, 10 rebounds) both notching double-doubles.
Markell Alston led Christ the King with 27 points of his own on 10 of 17 shooting, and he got help from three other double-digit scorers. But ultimately Duncanville was able to take advantage of a 12-2 discrepancy in second-chance points to rebound from the loss to De La Salle.
As a team, the Panthers shot 43 percent from the field but were able to knock down 9 of their 22 3-point attempts and win the rebounding battle 37-31. Neither team got much scoring from its bench, but the Lions missed on a couple of key plays down the stretch as Duncanville turned a seven-point deficit with six minutes to go into a victory.
The Panthers led 36-27 at halftime, but a big third quarter from Christ the King brought them within two heading into the final frame. They jumped out to a lead early in the fourth quarter but ultimately couldn’t hold on, falling for the second straight game after losing to Chaminade (Mo.) on Thursday.
