High school football season in Texas has reached high gear as most teams are near the midpoint of their schedules.

The early portion of the year has featured plenty of great matchups, including some truly terrific showdowns between top-25 teams. Only one of those is on tap this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there won’t still be plenty of excitement around the Lone Star State.

Below are the key games to watch this week in Texas:

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

Humble @ #3 North Shore – Thurs., Sept. 26
North Shore dominated South Oak Cliff 38-0 to open the season and then handled Crowley 28-13 in Week 2. The Mustangs smothering defense overwhelmed Westfield 47-3 on Friday night as they stayed undefeated. Following a bye, they’ll host a 3-0 Humble squad looking to pull off a major upset. The Wildcats will have their hands full though.

#23 C.E. King @ #2 Atascocita – Friday, Sept. 27
Atascocita pulled off one of the biggest — and most impressive — wins of the early season by beating a strong Katy team 41-24. A top-10 showdown with Austin Westlake last weekend again put them to the test, but they passed with flying colors by rolling to a 39-21 that ended the Chaps’ 44-game regular season winning streak dating back to 2018. After a week off, they’ll face a newly minted top-25 C.E. King squad on Friday. The Panthers are 2-1 after beating Dickinson and Dekaney, but this will be by far their toughest test of the season.

#16 Celina @ Panther Creek – Friday, Sept. 27
Celina has been a major riser in the state rankings after jumping out to a 4-0 start with wins over Franklin, Gunter, La Vega and Bellville. The Panthers, who come in 3-0 themselves, might be their toughest test of the season, though. Four-star junior wide receiver Jalen Lott leads an offense that has put up 189 points across its first four games.

Trinity @ #19 Byron Nelson – Friday, Sept. 27
Byron Nelson started the season off with wins over Frenship and Lewisville to get to 2-0, but dropped a tough one to No. 4 Southlake Carroll 33-21 two weeks ago. Coming off a bye, they’ll look to add another to the win column. Standing in their way is a 3-1 Trinity squad that gave Southlake Carroll everything it could handle last week before falling 56-48. The Trojans offense is averaging better than 50 points per game through four contests.

#20 Prosper @ Plano East – Friday, Sept. 27
Prosper started the season inside the top 15 of the state rankings, but dropped its first game to No. 7 Westlake. They’ve since responded with dominant wins over Rockwall-Heath and McKinney Boyd, beating those two teams by an average of 34.5 points. Undefeated Plano East will be looking to pull off a huge upset though, coming off four straight wins and boasting a defense that is only allowing 18 points per game over its last three contests.
