Top Florida high school basketball coach hired as an assistant at University of Miami

After the best four-year coaching run in Florida high school basketball history, Columbus High head coach Andrew Moran is moving on to the college level.
On Thursday, Moran — who had been at the school since 2019 — was officially announced as an assistant coach at the University of Miami under Jai Lucas. The news that he was leaving had been speculated for some time, but now officially opens the Columbus job.
The Explorers are coming off a Class 7A state championship four-peat than ran from 2022-25 and was led by Duke signees Cameron Boozer and Cayden Boozer, as well as star junior Jaxon Richardson. In 2024-25 alone, Columbus won its state title and the Chipotle Nationals earlier this month, crowning them as the top high school basketball team in the country.

During his time as the Explorers’ head coach, Moran compiled an overall record of 145-34 in Miami. He also was recently named the Naismith National High School boys basketball coach of the year after leading Columbus to a 30-3 record that was capped off with a win over Dynamic Prep (Texas) at the national tournament.
On Friday, the school posted a message to him on both their Twitter and Instagram thanking him for his time at Columbus.
“Congratulations to Coach Andrew Moran on his new role as an Assistant Coach with the University of Miami @caneshoops! Over the last 6 years, Coach Moran led the Explorers with heart, humility, and unmatched excellence—guiding our basketball program to a 145-34 record, four straight FHSAA Class 7A State Championships, and the undisputed 2025 National Championship. More than a coach, he’s been a mentor, role model, and pillar of the Columbus Brotherhood. While we’ll miss seeing him on the sideline in red and navy blue, we know he’ll continue to do great things in orange and green.” #CPride#Adelante
