Two Indiana girls basketball teams complete their game a month after it started
The Lanesville Eagles and the Borden Braves finally completed the longest match played in Indiana girls basketball history. While the competition was fierce, the visiting team Braves defeated the Eagles 34-33 to win the Southern Atlantic Conference championship.
Though it was a low-scoring match, this game was rich in drama, especially in how the game started and ended. According to Jeffersonville News and Tribune’s Chris Stoner, the game started on December 12, 2024, at 7:08 p.m. local time.
Initially, Borden was declared the winner last month 30-29. However, a scorekeeping mistake ensued as the official scorebook showed a 30-30 count at the end of regulation. The two teams raised this concern to the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Eventually, all parties agreed to finish the game at a later date.
However, finding a vacant date was challenging because the two teams have other Indiana girls basketball games on the schedule. Entertaining this game’s continuation could drastically alter their calendar. Lanesville and Borden finally agreed on January 26, 2025. Coincidentally, given how their seasons transpired, the game’s outcome decided on the conference championship.
Heading into the game, Lanesville had a 16-2 record and had a six-game winning streak. Conversely, Borden was at 15-5, while carrying a three-game winning streak. The two teams continued their game, playing a four-minute overtime period.

Longest Indiana girls basketball game comes to an end
Borden’s A.J. Mallad opened the scoring in overtime with a put-back field goal. However, Lanesville’s Hadley Crosier tied the count at 32 with a driving basket. When the Braves missed on an attempt, the Eagles found Crosier, who drew a shooting foul.
Unfortunately, she split her free throw attempts, leaving the door open for Borden to win the game. Conversely, Ava Wheeler’s layup off a spin move had Borden ahead 34-33 with 12 seconds left. Lanesville went to Crosier again for what could have been the game-winning shot, but her bank shot didn’t convert.
Finally, the game that started more than a month ago was over. Borden defeated Lanesville in an Indiana girls basketball game for the first time since 2016. Wheeler led the Braves with 14 points, while Crosier finished with the same number of points for the Eagles. Likewise, Borden’s victory can be considered an upset because Lanesville is 52nd in the Indiana On3 Composite Team Rankings, while the Braves are 63rd.
After winning the longest game in Indiana high school basketball, Borden will face Paoli on January 30. They are now at 17-5 after picking up another victory against West Washington on the 28th. Conversely, Lanesville will host Scottsburg on January 31.
