As the 2024 Virginia high school football season finishes its first week of action in October, the Virginia On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 list as of Oct. 8 has stayed relatively the same. While no changes occurred in the top ten, four teams from 11 to 25 took on new spots.

Meanwhile, the best squads have distanced themselves from the pack, as eight of the top ten teams remain undefeated. Here’s where Virginia’s top teams are after six weeks of action this year.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Maury

The Commodores cruise to a 5-0 record by defeating I.C. Norcom by 37 points. They are the undisputed best Virginia high school football team on both sides. Offensively, they are averaging 43.2 points per game. Defensively, they have limited their opponents to eight points per contest. Maury should have no problems maintaining that deficit when they face Woodrow Wilson on the 11th.

2. Phoebus

The Phantoms made light work of the Hampton Crabbers 37-3. They haven’t allowed a touchdown in three of their five games, including a shutout of Heritage. Phoebus can easily cruise to 8-0 if they maintain their dominance against Kecoughtan, Gloucester, and Menchville.

3. Oscar Smith

The Tigers have maintained their spot in the top ten despite having a bye last week. However, before taking a break during the Virginia high school football season, they shut down their previous three opponents: Great Bridge, Nansemond River, and Grassfield. Oscar Smith will return to action this week against Indian River in a match they are heavily favored to win.

4. Liberty Christian Academy

Before their bye last week, the Bulldogs escaped with a one-touchdown victory against Heritage. They are at 4-0 as they continue their season on Oct. 11 against Rustburg. Liberty Christian has the fourth-best offense in Virginia high school football, averaging 38 points per game.

5. Madison

The Warhawks maintain an unblemished 6-0 record after blanking South County 42-0. They have scored at least 40 points in their last two games and never went below 35 in their previous five outings. Madison will take on Westfield in their next outing for a shot at a 7-0 mark.

6. Highland Springs

The Springers have won two straight after losing back-to-back games to second-ranked Phoebus and top-ranked Maury. Highland Springs had a balanced attack during their latest victory against Riverbend, scoring rushing and receiving touchdowns. Maintaining their current momentum will give the Springers an easy time against Henrico, Potomac, and Hermitage in their next three games.

7. Battlefield

The Bobcats have continued their streak of not allowing double-digit points to their opponents in this Virginia high school football season. Their latest match was one-sided, as they dominated Unity Reed 56-7. Sage Davis single-handedly dominated the Lions by scoring four rushing touchdowns before halftime. Battlefield has a shot at a 6-0 mark against Gainesville next week.

8. Dinwiddie

The Generals buried their loss to Maury with two consecutive victories. After defeating Hopewell on the last weekend of September, they started this month with a 21-14 win over Thomas Dale. Dinwiddie’s defense has stepped up, allowing only 21 points in their last two games after giving up 46 in their first two matches. The Generals can maintain the momentum against Colonial Heights this week.

9. King’s Fork

The Bulldogs surged to their fifth consecutive victory after a 33-7 domination of Indian River. From a 14-7 halftime score, King’s Fork scored 19 unanswered points to seal the win. The Bulldogs will get Grassfield and Lakeland in their next games before a showdown with third-ranked Oscar Smith.

10. Matoaca

The Warriors earned their fifth victory when Meadowbrook forfeited the game. Since that game technically counts as a shutout, Matoaca has four such victories this season. Keeping their shutout streak will be challenging as they face Thomas Dale. However, what’s important is the win they will likely get versus the Knights.
