The Washington Commanders continue to reach out to their community by hosting 150 high school football coaches representing over 40 schools at their mandatory minicamp. NBC4 Senior Sports Producer Heater McDonough shared a short video on X showing the coaches observing how the NFC East squad conduct practice.

In addition to connecting with the people who support the team, this initiative is also a fantastic avenue for knowledge exchange. The coaches in attendance learn from one of the NFL’s top teams and share tips among each other.

The high school football coaches present at the Commanders’ practice facility in Ashburn, Virginia are in luck because the team they observed are trending up. In 2023, Washington finished with a 4-13 record, leading to the ouster of their head coach (Ron Rivera) and their coordinators (Eric Bienemy and Jack Del Rio).

Revamping the coaching staff with Dan Quinn, Kliff Kingsbury, and Joe Whitt Jr. did wonders as the Commanders raced to a 12-5 record, an eight-game improvement. Likewise, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after establishing a record of most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback and leading the squad to their first NFC Championship Game in 33 years.

In a report by FOX 5 Local’s Chad Ricardo, Falls Church head coach Tim Coogan said, “It’s awesome. Any time that I’m here with the Commanders, it’s been fantastic. They really pull you in and make you feel part of a family. You get to see the culture when you walk in.”

Meanwhile, Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner commented, “Coaches are really important in a journey of a player. I think I wouldn’t be here without some of the coaches that I’ve had in middle school, in high school.”

Running back Austin Ekeler also added, “I think it’s awesome when organizations with so much influence put themselves in a position to also encourage others and show others their way as well, especially with DQ.”
