Join the CommunityWhen Nick Saban retired, Alabama hired Kalen DeBoer who at that time was the hottest name in college football. So far, it seems to have not been a complete miss. Right now, Curt Citgnetti is the hottest name in college football. He has Indiana performing much better than they have any business being, and he appears to have a Saban-like mentality when it comes to upholding standards. It seems to me nobody has Cignetti on their hot-boards, and I'm not sure why. Personally, I think he is a no-brainer hire who would be an instant success with our resources. What do y'all think?
The Vols can match up with anyone in the country, but missed field goals and incredibly costly turnovers ruined the playoff hopes. That’s the short and simple of it. The pass interference on first down of GA’s last drive was also BS as well as the offensive PI against 17 at MS St. The 98 team had incredibly good luck: pass interference and a made field goal at Syracuse; created big turnovers and won the field goal battle against FL; the Stoerner miracle fumble; and not having to face Weinke in the championship game. Very good luck.
I’m going to start going through the candidates and providing more than just “not so-and-so” or “yes to so-and-so”. It’s easy to just grab onto other people’s opinions and/or hearsay without digging in, but I’ve never been the type to not dig. After a little digging, I’m good with Jon Sumrall if he’s the choice, and here’s why: 1. Alabama product. He was born in Texas, but he went to Grissom HS and is in the Huntsville/Madison Sports HOF. This plus his time at Troy gives him some in-state credibility with coaches, obviously with the coaching part more influential - but the playing days are worth mentioning. He was at Troy for 2 stints - 3 years as an assistant and 2 years as HC. Troy’s coaches usually also have pretty good ties in South Georgia, but I don’t KNOW that about him. 2. Varied coaching career. He has worked at Kentucky twice and Ole Miss once in addition to stints at Troy, Tulane (x2), and San Diego. He has coached under Rich Brooks, Neal Brown, Matt Luke, and Mark Stoops (amongst others). Lots of schemes, systems, and contacts within the industry. 3. Youth and success. I said in the beginning that I wanted an injection of young energy. Jon is 43 and has had success in both stops as a HC. Past performance is no indicator of future results in coaching, but it’s always good to see. Maybe even more importantly to me, it would appear from their past, that Joe Craddock would want to come with him here unless he gets the HC job at Tulane. Craddock has been with Sumrall since Jon took his first HC position. Craddock has always been a QB coach and OC, and the youth, with Craddock only 40, at that position in the coaching staff should bring significantly more innovation and flexibility. There are obviously some draw backs, but I like the above positives way more than any of those draw backs. I was more skeptical of Sumrall before I started the deeper dive, so this effort changed my surface level opinions. Sure, there can be debate, but I see a lot of potential and a lot of reasons to expect success. As I roll through the other candidates, I’ll put out something similar. My goal isn’t to figure out who is best, because I really don’t think we as fans are capable of that. However, we can look at history, results, experiences, etc. and make a semi-informed decision of whether or not we have reasonable assurance that success has some degree of likelihood. I’m going to target getting 1 out every day or 2, just for my own entertainment, and we’ll see what kind of discussion it creates. My goal isn’t to convince anyone of anything other than to consider candidates on a deeper level than “Josh Pate said so” or “XXXX said they’re no good”.
This moron doesn't know anything about Auburn! He's doing overtime work for REC! I want a coach that keeps notes on all these shots people are taking at us right now! Then make them eat every single stupid word! Thanks @Charlie5 you got me all bothered this morning! 😂
but who cares? No one.
Vols expected to go see him this week. Final decision coming soon. OSU is picking up momentum but we’ve seen Tennessee hold strong in this one before.
** From what I'm told, Florida is optimistic about their chance at landing Lane Kiffin. I've spoken with quite a few Florida folks over the past few days because of the game coming up and what I'll say is I think the Ole Miss folks who are optimistic about Kiffin staying are probably underestimating some of the ties, connections, and history there for Kiffin. So while the LSU job is one that a lot of people would take over Florida, the Gator folks I've spoken with believe there's a better than 50% chance that Lane ends up in Gainesville. ** Kiffin moving to Florida is probably the one move the increases Sumrall's chances of ending up in the SEC more than anything else. That prompts an opening at Ole Miss, a place where he has been an assistant coach, and it keeps LSU open. If you are a Kentucky fan who is hoping for a change sooner rather than later and you like the idea of Sumrall succeeding Stoops, I do think a Kiffin move to Florida is one thing that makes it a little less likely. ** The LSU job is still one worth keeping an eye on for Sumrall but I don't think it's the most likely outcome. The big fact there has been what you do, re: optics, after firing Brian Kelly. It seems like Joe Brady would be high on their wish list and they are going through Tier A options. ** It will be interesting to see if Auburn might keep DJ Durkin around as head coach beyond the rest of this year. What a lot of folks at Auburn are wondering is why you would buy Freeze out and have Durkin run it and then give it over to Sumrall. I could definitely see a good case for letting Sumrall have the job but a lot of Auburn people are looking at the prospective candidates for the job and wondering if you could go from Durkin to Sumrall or just let Durkin have it. He didn't do great at Maryland a bunch of years ago but has been a power conference head coach and a high level DC at Ole Miss, A&M, and Auburn since then. ** I have not heard anything substantively new when it comes to where this is going for Kentucky. After the Cats beat Auburn I did have a couple of people reach out and say things like, "Maybe folks will stop calling for Stoops job now," and it was coming from places that made me wonder.... Because what I was led to believe earlier was a willingness to have conversations about a change. If Kentucky were to beat Florida this weekend that's 4-5 with two SEC wins in a row. ** I'll report what I hear on any front. As of now, we have to keep talking about the carousel because Kentucky's circumstances are definitely relevant there. I believe there has been an agreement not to let related topics leak which makes me think there could still be stuff in the works. It's entirely possible they could be getting their ducks in a row, UK's side or even both sides, while seeing how the season plays out. Could be moving parts, or it could already be decided. ** Seeing Mitch on the field at Auburn didn't do a whole lot for me either way. He's the athletics director and nobody in that role is ever going to put himself in the position of a fan who wants a change publicly. He's going to support the coaches and players after a win no matter what's going to happen. The bigger question in my mind would be what a string of wins or positive play might do to Stoops' mentality; could it convince him that he could still get it right next year, etc.
Saw this on another board. Discuss.
Don't care how you cut it.
"that's on the head coach... That's on me"
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference issued a public reprimand of Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney for violating the ACC Sportsmanship Policy following Clemson’s game against Duke on November 1. In addition, the league announced that an institutional fine has been issued to Clemson ($10,000) as a result of the violation. The funds from the imposed institutional fine will be placed into the Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship account. Swinney’s postgame comments regarding the officiating were in direct violation of the ACC Sportsmanship Policy that states: “Public criticism of officials or public comments evaluating the officiating of particular contests is not in the best interest of intercollegiate athletics. Individuals associated with the athletics program are prohibited, therefore, from commenting while acting in an official capacity on officiating other than directly to the Conference office.” The ACC considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.
Think about [*]Offensive Line Coach by trade [*]Elevated to HC as feel good hire [*]Wins a couple of big games but everything about the program feels disjointed The only difference being the financial resources poured into Sherrone because the AD is desperate for this experiment to work. This will end the same as it did for Pittman, it will just take a lot longer to get there
Nebraska quarterback leg injury Saturday night, and his season is over. Both On3 and HuskerOnline confirmed the news on Sunday.
I get it’s not the norm but didn’t he fire Rob Spence the moment he became head coach? is there a positive to keeping guys right now over letting them go? I know he can’t hire anyone if they are coaching but agents can talk and you can get the ball rolling.
Don't come at me about your guy not being on this list. That's between you and you. 👀
What’s his buyout?
Too many have had their head in the sands defending it
In a few hours? Who will be the top 5 candidates
BITXH. No one else decides if you go back into the game with a sprained ankle. Its the players choice. No one elses. I stick with everything I posted after the Maryland game. Isn't a gamer. Soft.
Obv that loss to wake last week is damaging. If we win out, will we be in charlotte? Do we control our own destiny?
