2022 ACC Tournament Day 3 LIVE UPDATES: Score, results, news
The No. 3 seed North Carolina Tar Heels routed the No. 6 seed Virginia Cavaliers on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, 63-43. Virginia only scored 13 points in the first half, the lowest number of points in a half in an ACC Tournament game in the shot clock era. The Cavaliers could never really close the gap in the second half and the outcome of the game was never really in doubt. Brady Manek led the ‘Heels with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. The former Oklahoma Sooner also connected on 3-of-7 three-point attempts. North Carolina big man Armando Bacot had yet another double-double, stuffing the stat sheet with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Tar Heels advance to Friday night’s ACC Tournament semifinals, where they will face the No. 7 seed Virginia Tech Hokies. The other semifinal matchup on Friday night will feature the No. 1 seed Duke Blue Devils vs. the No. 4 seed Miami Hurricanes.
The No. 7 seed Virginia Tech Hokies stunned the No. 2 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday night in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, 87-80. The Fighting Irish could find no answer for Virginia Tech’s Keve Aluma, who had his way inside in the painted area. He dumped in 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. The Hokies’ Justyn Mutts also had a spectacular performance, stuffing the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Turnovers played a massive role in the upset win, as the Fighting Irish had 12 turnovers, with 10 of them coming in the first half. The victory for the Hokies means their slim NCAA Tournament hopes are still alive. They will await the winner of the Virginia–North Carolina game this evening.
The No. 4 seeded Miami Hurricanes needed overtime to outlast the No. 13 seeded Boston College Eagles on Thursday afternoon. They survived 71-69 thanks to a game-winning layup by Jordan Miller with .5 seconds left in overtime. Miami’s Charlie Moore threw a beautiful transition pass ahead to Miller, who layed the ball in for the game-winner. It was a valiant effort by Boston College. They nearly won the game at the buzzer at the end of regulation. They launched a half-court heave from the New York Life sign at the buzzer to win, but it missed by a fraction of an inch off the front of the rim.
In the game prior, Syracuse would not go gently into that good night — even without Buddy Boeheim. However, the Orange weren’t able to pull a monstrous upset over Duke, as the Blue Devils found their game in the second half. Duke closed the game on a 10-0 run, and secured an 88-79 victory.
In a riveting showdown, it was Jeremy Roach and Wendell Moore Jr. who led the way for the Blue Devils. Shaking off their haze from their loss to North Carolina, Moore Jr. contributed 26 points, while Roach added 19 points off the bench.
On the other hand, Jimmy Boeheim — Buddy’s brother — fought valiantly for his family. However, it wasn’t meant to be — although Boeheim scored 28 in the loss. Additionally, guard Joseph Girard III scored 23 for the Orange.
Despite their immense fight, the Orange came up just short against Mike Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils. Now, Duke awaits their opponent for Friday’s Semifinals showdown.
Earlier this season, the Hokies defeated the Fighting Irish at the Cassell Coliseum. On Thursday, Notre Dame stars Blake Wesley and Paul Atkinson Jr. will be looking for revenge against their ACC foe. Meanwhile, the Hokies are looking to keep their momentum going, as Virginia Tech defeated Clemson 76-75 in overtime on Wednesday by virtue of a miraculous three-pointer from Darius Maddox at the buzzer.

Finally, No. 3 North Carolina looks to keep their momentum moving forward against No. 6 Virginia. On Wednesday, the Cavaliers held off a tenacious Louisville squad for a one-point victory. However, the Tar Heels are coming off a season-defining victory — delivering Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski an emphatic loss in his final game at Cameron Indoor. In that showdown, North Carolina star Armando Bacot scored 23 points. He’ll be looking to continue his great play against the Cavaliers.
