2022 NBA Draft: Boston Celtics selects JD Davison, Alabama point guard
Alabama point guard JD Davison is off the board in the 2022 NBA Draft. With the No. 53 pick in the second round, Davison was selected by the Boston Celtics.
A five-star recruit in the Class of 2021, JD Davison played one season at Alabama before declaring for the NBA Draft. Ultimately, it was a disappointing season for Alabama basketball. With a chance to break through, they faltered. They lost to Vanderbilt in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Then, they fell to Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
His season-high in scoring came in one of Alabama’s biggest games all year. He scored 20 points in Alabama’s upset win over Gonzaga. That, along with his consistent play all year, are just a couple of the reasons why JD Davison was on the SEC All-Freshman Team.
During his one season at Alabama, JD Davison averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. He also shot 46.3% from the field and 30.1% from three-point range. He did so on 25.8 minutes played per game.
Prior to the NBA Draft, ESPN mocked JD Davison as a second-round pick. That’s because, while he has a lot of potential, there is still plenty of room for Davison to grow as a player.

In particular, Davison struggles to shoot from three-point range. He also has had problems with turnovers and matching up with other point guards defensively. Of course, those are all things he can work on and his high-upside potential is going to help in the meantime.
The truth is that JD Davison is incredibly athletic. He’s a walking highlight reel, and he can dominate opponents with his speed and pure athleticism.
If Davison can clean up a few issues in his game, then he has the potential to be a good NBA player. He just needs the time to develop as a player.
