In its first action of the Pac-12 Tournament, No. 2 seed UCLA cruised to a 75-65 over No. 7 seed Washington State. The Bruins win sends them to Friday night’s conference semifinals. They were led by Jaime Jaquez’s double-double, which included 23 points and 11 rebounds. UCLA dominated on the glass and shot 47.5 from the field.

The No. 4 Colorado Buffaloes were on a mission heading into the NCAA Tournament, riding the momentum of winning seven of their last eight contests. Despite No. 5 Oregon proving it can win big games by beating UCLA twice as well as knocking off USC in the regular season, the Ducks couldn’t outlast a young but gritty Colorado team on Thursday, falling 80-69.

The victory means the Buffs picked up a quad two win today and now have a chance to play No. 1 Arizona in the Pac-12 semifinal game tomorrow and a victory over the Wildcats would mean a key quad one win which would bolster their resume in a major way in the eyes of the NCAA committee.

The duo of senior Evan Battey (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Jabari Walker down low (18 points, 17 rebounds) led Colorado in the opening stanza. Freshman point guard KJ Simpson stepped up under the bright lights coming off the bench, adding 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

For the Ducks, Syracuse transfer Quincy Guerrier carried the load like he has done throughout the year with 25 points and 13 boards.

All eyes are on Saturday’s Pac-12 title matchup — and it’s important to note Colorado upset Arizona earlier this season — so it’s fair to assume the semifinal showdown will be yet another close contest.

The drama continued in the first game of Thursday’s slate. The No. 8 Stanford Cardinal gave No. 1 Arizona all it could handle in a game that featured 23 lead changes, but ultimately the Wildcats prevailed winning 84-80 due to a strong second half performance.

The Wildcats were led by Christian Koloko, who imposed his will and dominated in the second half. The Arizona star set a career high with 24 points, while adding nine rebounds and four assists.

Pac-12 Player of the Year Bennedict Mathurin lived up to the honor in his first conference tournament with 18 points and seven boards.

Stanford was led once again by Spencer Jones, who beat his career-high that was set in Wednesday’s victory over Arizona State with 28 points, while adding seven rebounds.

One note to keep an eye on as the NCAA Tournament nears is the health of Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa who was helped off the floor in the game’s final minutes with an apparent lower body injury.

With two more matchups on the Thursday slate, the picture is becoming clearer. Tonight, keep an eye on No. 2 UCLA vs. No. 7 Washington State and No. 3 USC vs. No. 6 Washington to close out the Pac-12 quarterfinals.

That sets up some big matchups for the quarterfinals. After earning byes through the first round, the top four seeds will all be in action on Thursday, including No. 2 seed UCLA, which is trying to repeat last March’s magic and make another NCAA Tournament run. Thursday’s winners advance to the semifinals on Friday.

The Pac-12 is in good position to see multiple bids in the NCAA Tournament, with On3’s latest Bracketology projecting three bids: Arizona, UCLA and USC. That said, there’s still time for a team to steal a bid and shake up the Etch-A-Sketch come Selection Sunday.
