2023 ACC Basketball Tournament: Updated projected seeds, schedule, magic numbers
With the postseason a week away for the ACC, the league’s 15 teams are still playing musical chairs before the conference tournament. One result from Monday night didn’t shift much but, based on Tuesday’s schedule, we should have a great idea of what the bracket will look like in Greensboro starting on March 7th.
ACC Basketball Standings:
- Pittsburgh Panthers – 21-8 (14-4)
- Miami Hurricanes – 23-6 (14-5)
- Virginia Cavaliers – 21-6 (13-5)
- Clemson Tigers – 21-8 (13-5)
- Duke Blue Devils – 21-8 (12-6)
- NC State Wolfpack – 22-8 (12-7)
- North Carolina Tar Heels – 18-11 (11-8)
- Wake Forest Demon Deacons – 18-11 (10-8)
- Syracuse Orange – 16-13 (9-9)
- Boston College Eagles – 14-15 (8-10)
- Florida State Seminoles – 9-20 (7-12)
- Virginia Tech Hokies – 16-13 (6-12)
- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – 12-17 (4-14)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish – 10-19 (2-16)
- Louisville Cardinals – 4-25 (2-16)
Pittsburgh sits in the No. 1 spot currently in the ACC. However, Miami sitting at No. 2 currently has higher odds to finish with the top spot at 62% as well as just a magic number of one compared to Pitt’s two. A big part of that is likely because of their season finale, a game for the Panthers in Coral Gables against the Hurricanes. From there, Clemson, Virginia, Duke are still sorting things out for themselves from No. 3 to No. 5 but the Tigers, at the moment, are sitting in the driver’s seat among that group since they control their own destiny.
Monday’s game between North Carolina and Florida State, which was a 77-66 win for the Tar Heels, did nothing to change the ACC standings as of now. UNC remained in the No. 7 seed while FSU remained at No. 11.

The Seminole’s loss keeps them in the bottom five of the ACC. They and Virginia Tech will fight for the No. 11 and No. 12 seed over this last week. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, and Louisville are all but locked into No. 13, No. 14, and No. 15 respectively.
Tuesday’s Schedule:
- Clemson at Virginia | 7:00 p.m. (ACCN)
- NC State at Duke | 7:00 p.m. (ESPN)
- Georgia Tech at Syracuse | 7:00 p.m. (ACCN Extra)
- Boston College at Wake Forest | 7:00 p.m. (ESPNU)
- Virginia Tech at Louisville | 9:00 p.m. (ACCN)
Tuesday’s schedule features a pair of massive bouts with Clemson at Virginia and NC State at Duke. The first will likely decide who eventually takes the No. 3 seed while the second will determine whether or not the Wolfpack will jump into the Top-5 of the standings over the final few days.
