The third day of action from the 2024 Big 12 Baseball Tournament is underway. First up was an elimination game between the TCU Horned Frogs and the Kansas State Wildcats.

To start the game, the Wildcats sent Jackson Wentworth to the mound. TCU countered by giving the ball to Ben Abeldt as its starting pitcher. Interestingly, Abeldt has been a reliever for the majority of the season and this was his first start.

TCU jumped ahead early and before long and worked six unanswered runs before Kansas State was able to get someone across home plate. After that, the Wildcats were able to get things going and make it a much closer game than it looked like it was going to be early. However, the Kansas State pitchers struggled to ever stop the bleeding and TCU went on to win 9-4.

With the win, TCU is advancing in the Big 12 Tournament. They’ll take on the loser of the Oklahoma-Kansas game. Meanwhile, Kansas State was eliminated and they’ll have to wait to find out if their season will continue in the NCAA Tournament.

The Sooners-Jayhawks matchup was just as exciting, seeing the top-seeded Sooners edge to 7-seeded Kansas Jayhawks 7-5. The Jayhawks led 4-2 early but five unanswered and 14 total hits from Oklahoma was enough to keep the Sooners’ conference tournament hopes alive.

Texas Tech took full control of Cincinnati early during their matchup, leading 8-0 after two innings. The Red Raiders never looked back and cruised to an eventual 10-5 victory as the Bearcats did their best to avoid being run-ruled in the latter innings.

Thursday wrapped up with a battle between Oklahoma State and UCF where the first eight runs of the game were scored in the first three half innings. OSU’s Carson Benge broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run. UCF’s Matt Cedarburg hit a two-run home run to put the Knights on top 6-5 but Oklahoma State would find the tying run to send the game to extra innings. UCF would go on to win 7-6 in 10 innings.
