Day 2 of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament got rolling on Wednesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, as a pair of games originally slated for Tuesday were played after weather delayed things the day prior.

And it was No. 8 seed Penn State pushing No. 1 seed Illinois all the way, taking a 3-0 lead in the early phases of the game not relinquishing it, pulling off a big-time upset to begin the day. On the back of strong starting pitching and an offense that didn’t stop hitting all game long, Penn State secured the 8-4 win to open play on Wednesday.

The No. 4 seed Michigan Wolverines and No. 5 seed Iowa Hawkeyes would do battle next, seeing pitchers Kurt Barr and Brody Brecht, allowing one combined run until the sixth inning when Michigan took a 2-1 lead on a wild pitch by Brecht. Iowa earned its run back in the next inning to tie the game. The score held into extra innings where the Wolverines would get the better of Iowa after Hawkeyes pitcher Jack Young walked the winning run in during the bottom of the 10th.

No. 2 seed Nebraska and No. 6 seed Purdue rounded out Wednesday’s action. The Boilermakers would hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first but after the Huskers scored four runs in the next half inning — they would never look back. The Huskers would defeat Purdue 6-2 thanks to the strong second inning performance to keep their Big Ten Tournament hopes alive for at least another day.
