Athens (Ala.) three-star offensive tackle Spencer Dowland has committed to Mississippi State.

His decision comes just a few days after he backed off of a longtime pledge to Auburn, which he announced on social media Tuesday evening.

Dowland is the nation’s No. 917 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the No. 53 offensive tackle in the class and the No. 34 recruit from Alabama.

He was committed to the Tigers for more than 15 months, but chose to leave the class when Auburn wanted to put him on a scholarship with their collective instead of a typical one.

“Auburn wanted me to be on collective scholarship and they are over the 85 scholarships. That didn’t set well with me and I want to be in the 85 scholarships. I’ve also thought about Ole Miss and I’ve been there a couple of times. But I really didn’t like it there and never got to meet Coach (Lane) Kiffin.”

The Bulldogs had made a strong impression on him already when he visited in October, and now he joins their class, which ranks No. 28 nationally in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.

“I really like Coach Kennedy,” he told Maroon and White after his decommitment from Auburn. “I was down there for a game-day visit and I think it was October 16th. I got to meet Coach Lebby and all that. I enjoyed it and I like the staff down there. I like their plans for me and I could see myself playing there.”
