2025 quarterback recruits that flipped their commitments
The crop of quarterback recruits in 2025 is one of the most decorated in recent memory, with five five-stars among the group and 23 ranked among the top 300 players nationally.
It’s a group that hasn’t come without plenty of recruiting drama, either. Five of the country’s top six signal-callers in the On3 Industry Ranking have been committed to multiple schools. And with less than two weeks until National Signing Day, the moves are not done yet.
Headlined by No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood flipping his commitment from LSU to Michigan on Thursday, here are the biggest quarterback flips in the 2025 class:
Bryce Underwood – Michigan
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 1 (#1 QB)
The nation’s No. 1 overall recruiting — and quarterback — Underwood committed to LSU over Michigan, Alabama and numerous others back in January. He visited Baton Rouge multiple times and never publicly showed up at another campus. But last month, Michigan made a run at him buoyed by huge investment from boosters in its NIL collective. On Thursday, news broke that Underwood had indeed completed the flip and gave first-year head coach Sherrone Moore a gargantuan recruiting win.
Keelon Russell – Alabama
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 3 (#3 QB)
Russell, who hails from the Dallas area, was a huge commitment for SMU and Rhett Lashlee last September. He was largely off the national recruiting radar at that point, despite putting together a prolific junior season at powerhouse Duncanville High. The Crimson Tide came into the picture in April with an offer after some big performances on the camp circuit and got him Tuscaloosa for an official visit the last weekend of May. A few days later, he flipped from the Mustangs to Alabama. And since then, he’s risen from a four-star prospect to the nation’s No. 2 quarterback a consensus five-star.
Husan Longstreet – USC
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 20 (#4 QB)
Longstreet initially flew under USC’s radar as it pursued — and landed — Julian Lewis. The latter committed to the Trojans as a 2026 recruit but eventually reclassified and started visiting other schools this summer and fall. Lincoln Riley and Co. weren’t caught off-guard though and stayed in communication with Longstreet, who plays at nearby Corona (Calif.) Centennial. Earlier this week, Lewis announced his decommitment (before eventually pledging to Colorado) and within minutes Longstreet had flipped to the hometown Trojans.
Deuce Knight – Auburn
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 27 (#5)
Knight was the prize of Notre Dame’s 2025 class when he pledged to the Irish in September 2023 over offers from Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oregon, Alabama and more. Over the next year, he made it back to South Bend on multiple occasions and remained firm in his commitment. But he also didn’t stop visiting other schools — namely Auburn. The Tigers hosted him three different times before he ultimately flipped to Hugh Freeze and Co. in early October.
His recruitment may not be done yet though, as Ole Miss brought him to campus earlier this month and is looking to pair him with five-star wide receiver commit Caleb Cunningham.
Julian Lewis – Colorado
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 39 (#6)
Lewis was the consensus No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class when he pledged to USC last August. But rumors started swirling pretty immediately that he wanted to move up to the Class of 2025. And he did exactly that in December. Over the summer, he took official visits to Auburn, Colorado, Indiana and USC. The Tigers ultimately dropped out of the race, but the Hoosiers and Buffaloes remained. He visited both schools multiple times this fall before decommitting from USC and then pledging to the Buffaloes live on national TV.
Antwann Hill – Memphis
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 201 (#14 QB)
The Houston County (Ga.) star was Colorado’s first quarterback commitment in the cycle, choosing the Buffaloes in October 2023 over Auburn, Florida and a number of others. He made that decision with the intention of reclassifying to 2024, but a month later decided he wouldn’t do that and reopened his recruitment. After official visits to multiple schools, he chose the Tigers over Florida in June and will be one of their highest-rated signees in recent memory next month.
Adam Schobel – TCU
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 205 (#16 QB)
Schobel, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound passer out of Columbus (Texas), has had one of the wilder recruitments of the cycle. At one time committed to Baylor for nearly 10 months, he chose to flip his pledge to Oklahoma State in April. When Russell flipped to Alabama and SMU poached TCU QB commit Ty Hawkins, the Horned Frogs went to work on Schobel. Less than a month after Hawkins announced his decision, Schobel ultimately joined up with the Horned Frogs to give their their quarterback of the future.
Ty Hawkins – SMU
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 208 (#17 QB)
Hawkins, who at the time was ranked as the nation’s No. 5 QB, gave a huge commitment to TCU in June 2023. He remained steadfast in that for nearly a year, but once SMU lost Russell to Alabama, it turned its attention to Hawkins. After a strong summer that included an invite to the Elite 11 Finals, he pulled the trigger on his flip in early July, setting off another chain reaction for the Horned Frogs.
Tramell Jones – Florida
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 249 (#21 QB)
A prolific passer out of Mandarin (Fla.), Jones was one of the earliest commitments to Florida State’s 2025 class back in April 2023. He became the centerpiece that Mike Norvell and Co. built what was a top-10 class around. Over the summer, Florida made a big push for him, but he ultimately said that his recruitment was shut down. But after the ‘Noles 1-9 start, he chose to decommit and then later announced his pledge to the rival Gators.

Blake Hebert – Notre Dame
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 363 (#26 QB)
Much like others in this cycle, Hebert was a big land last summer for Clemson when he committed to the Tigers in June. He was a building block for the Tigers class, which has hovered around the top 10 for the majority of the cycle. But once Notre Dame lost Deuce Knight to Auburn, Hebert became their No. 1 flip target. And a short two weeks after Knight’s flip, the Irish had another QB in their class.
Robert McDaniel – Arizona
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 425 (#29)
A one-time Cal commit, McDaniel backed off that pledge in late May right after an official visit to Arizona. Two days later, he pledged to the Wildcats. This fall, Florida offered and made a run at him before ultimately focusing its attention on flipping Tramell Jones.
Kevin Sperry – Florida State
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 448 (#31)
Sperry was one of the top quarterbacks in the class when he committed to the Sooners in March 2023. At the time, he chose OU over Florida State and was coming off a strong sophomore season where he was named Texas District 5-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year at Rock Hill (Texas) Prosper. He transferred to Oklahoma City’s Carl Albert for his junior season and became a vocal recruiter for Brent Venables and Co. After he helped the Titans go a perfect 14-0 and win an Oklahoma 5A championship, he chose to transfer again to Denton (Texas) Guyer, where Oklahoma five-star signee Jackson Arnold had played.
Amidst an up-and-down senior season — as well as major struggles for the Sooners — he began looking around. When Jones decommitted last week, he pounced on his opportunity and pledged to the Seminoles.
Other notable quarterback moves
That isn’t the end of the list, though. Four-star quarterback Carter Smith was a longtime Michigan commit before the Wolverines ramped up their pursuit of Underwood. Once it was apparent that he was their priority, Smith backed off his commitment earlier this month. He took an official visit to Wisconsin last weekend and is now trending to the Badgers, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).
Prior to Arizona landing McDaniel, the Wildcats had a commitment from three-star Dash Beierly. But the No. 32 QB in the class flipped to Washington in January and looks to be locked in with the Huskies.
Fellow three-star Jackson Kollock was Washington’s quarterback pledge until Beierly flipped. He decommited a day after, and then two months later announced his commitment to Minnesota.
In June, three-star Cutter Woods backed off his commitment to Wake Forest and instead joined up with South Carolina.
