The college football transfer portal has been officially open for a week, and there has been no shortage of chaos as players across the country look for a new home for the 2025 season. The portal opened at the end of the regular season and will close on Dec. 28.

During last year’s transfer portal window, roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players entered the portal. With 1,754 athletes having already entered during the current transfer opening, several programs have begun scooping up talent just a week into this round of musical chairs.

On3’s Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.

Below are the current top 10 teams in the On3 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

1. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Transfers in: 5
Transfers out: 10
Top addition: Illinois State OT Hunter Zambrano (No. 32 NATL., No. 2 OT)

Summary: Texas Tech lost former Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Micah Hudson to the transfer portal, but the Red Raiders have still built the top-ranked transfer class thus far in the 2024-25 cycle. Three transfer portal four-star targets lead the way for Tech: Mississippi State cornerback Brice Pollock, Miami (Ohio) wide receiver Reginald Virgil and Illinois State offensive tackle Hunter Zambrano. Also committed are former four-star CB Dontae Balfour (Charlotte) and portal three-star safety Cole Wisniewski (North Dakota State).

2. Ole Miss Rebels

Transfers in: 6
Transfers out: 9
Top addition: Nebraska EDGE Princewill Umanmielen (No. 10 NATL., No. 3 EDGE)

Summary: Lane Kiffin & Co. have put together top-five transfer portal classes each of the last three cycles, and it’s looking like things will be no different this time around. On Saturday, the Rebels landed Nebraska edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen — a top-10 player in the portal, per the On3 Industry Ranking. Ole Miss has also added Arkansas tight end Luke Hasz, LSU EDGE Dashawn Womack, Arkansas DB Jaylon Braxton, Arkansas IOL Patrick Kutas and Charlotte OT PJ Wilkins.

3. Auburn Tigers

Transfers in: 6
Transfers out: 12
Top addition: Virginia Tech OT Xavier Chaplin (No. 13 NATL., No. 1 OT)

Summary: The No. 1 offensive tackle that has entered the transfer portal this month is off the board and heading to The Plains. Auburn landed Virginia Tech OT Xavier Chaplin alongside five other players out of the portal. Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold is one of the biggest moves so far, and Miami (Ohio) corner Raion Strader is one of the more talented defensive backs coming off the market.

4. Kansas Jayhawks

Transfers in: 6
Transfers out: 6
Top addition: Alabama S Jahlil Hurley (No. 162 NATL., No. 17 S)

Summary: A former top-50 recruit out of the high school class of 2023, Jahlil Hurley was a top-20 safety in the transfer portal coming out of Alabama. Kansas picked him up on Sunday. Hurley joins South Carolina linebacker Bangally Kamara, Iowa running back Leshon Williams, Ball State WR Cameron Pickett, Oklahoma State safety Lyrik Rawls and South Alabama kicker Laith Marjan.

5. Houston Cougars

Transfers in: 5
Transfers out: 14
Top addition: Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman (No. 51 NATL., No. 8 QB)

Summary: A five-star recruit in the high school class of 2022, Conner Weigman is a top-10 passer in this transfer cycle after leaving Texas A&M. Weigman passed for 819 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions in six games with the Aggies this year. Also committed to Houston are New Mexico OT McKenzie Agnello, Louisiana WR Harvey Broussard, California IOL Matthew Wykoff and Oklahoma State IOL Jason Brooks.

6. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Summary: Minnesota is one of the few schools you will find thus far that has brought in more transfers this cycle than it has had enter the portal. Miami (Ohio) wide receiver Javon Tracy is a top-150 player in the portal and is joined by eight others, including five Power 4 transfers.

7. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Transfers in: 3
Transfers out: 3
Top addition: Florida Atlantic RB CJ Campbell (No. 311 NATL., No. 21 RB)

Summary: A relatively quiet cycle to this point — both outgoing and incoming — Rutgers has still benefited from the transfer portal more than most programs. FAU running back CJ Campbell is one of On3’s highest-rated running back transfers. The Knights have also added USF defensive lineman Doug Blue-Eli and James Madison DL Darold Dengohe.

8. Missouri Tigers

Transfers in: 2
Transfers out: 9
Top addition: Mississippi State WR Kevin Coleman (No. 21 NATL., No. 8 WR)

Summary: Although Mizzou has seen a disparity in raw numbers of incoming and outgoing transfers, the Tigers managed to land one of the best receivers out the portal. Mississippi State wideout Kevin Coleman, a Saint Louis native, is currently the No. 21 overall player and No. 8 receiver in the portal. He chose to leave Starkville and go home to Columbia. Northern Illinois safety Santana Banner is also committed to Missouri.

9. Duke Blue Devils

Transfers in: 1
Transfers out: 4
Top addition: Tulane QB Darian Mensah (No. 28 NATL., No. 5 QB)

Summary: Duke QB Maalik Murphy leaving Durham was a big hit to the Blue Devils, but Duke has come away still standing thus far. After losing Murphy, the No. 4 QB in the portal, the Blue Devils brought in Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah — the No. 5 QB in the portal. Not a bad turnaround at the position.

10. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Transfers in: 3
Transfers out: 9
Top addition: Northern Illinois QB Ethan Hampton (No. 989 NATL., No. 100 QB)

Summary: Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson announced on Monday afternoon that he was stepping down from the helm at Wake, so there could be movement to watch out for here with the Demon Deacons. Still, Wake Forest has added some productive pieces to the 2025 roster with Ethan Hampton, Tennessee WR Kaleb Webb and ECU DL C.J. Mims.
