San Diego Bishop’s School three-star quarterback Cash Herrera has decommitted from Iowa, he announced on Monday.

He was pledged to the Hawkeyes since Oct. 3, when he chose the Big Ten program over UCLA.

Herrera is the No. 679 overall prospect and No. 42 QB in the 2026 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 63 player in California.

The 6-foot-3 signal-caller announced his decommitment on social media:

“First off, I would like to thank the staff at Iowa for believing in me. After long discussions with my family, I have decided to re-open my recruitment. I wish nothing but the best for the Iowa program in the future.”

In May, Herrera picked up offers from Cal and Arizona. He’s now back on the board ahead of his senior season. As a junior, Herrera threw for 2,033 yards and rushed for 334 more. He tallied 32 touchdowns and is line for a big campaign this fall for the Bishop’s School.

“Iowa made me feel great and wanted,” Herrera told On3’s Chad Simmons when he committed back in the fall. “They brought me in as family which felt very good. I think them and UCLA were close in how they made me feel, but the vibe at Iowa is great. Like I said earlier, the game day is what really brought me in because of how rowdy it gets there. I like that everyone is bought into the game and just not there to be there.”

Hawkeyes lose signal-caller in 2026 class

With Herrera no longer in the mix in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes now have nine commits in their 2026 class. In classic Iowa fashion, the class is bolstered by talent on the offensive line.

Five of the nine commits in the class are on the offensive line, including each of the three highest-ranked prospects pledged. Waterloo (Iowa) West four-star offensive tackle Carson Nielsen headlines as the nation’s No. 17 OT and No. 2 player in Iowa this cycle.

Brandon (S.D.) Valley four-star interior offensive lineman Hudson Parliament and Hinsdale (Ill.) Central four-star IOL Gene Riordan are the No. 20 and No. 21 players at their position this cycle. Parliament, Chanhassen (Minn.) three-star IOL Owen Linder and Iowa City West Senior three-star IOL Colin Whitters all committed in January.

Other commits in the class include: Detroit Divine Child three-star athlete Marcello Vitti, Winneconne (Wisc.) three-star wide receiver Brody Schaffer, Neptune Beach (Fla.) Duncan U. Fletcher three-star WR Diondre Smith and Minneapolis Edina three-star defensive lineman Sawyer Jezierski.

The class ranks No. 30 in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. That’s good for 10th in the Big Ten.
