4-star DL Daevin Hobbs announces commitment date
Concord (N.C.) Jay M Robinson four-star defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs has locked in a date for his commitment. Robinson will be announcing his college decision on Aug. 1, he announced on social media.
Hobbs, the No. 188 overall prospect and No. 25 defensive lineman in the 2023 On3 Consensus, took officials visits to Auburn and North Carolina in June. He has also unofficially visited Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee and Wake Forest.
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, he has a 95.3% chance to commit to the Tar Heels. The Tigers have the next-best odds at 1.9%, while the Volunteers are given a 1.1% chance to land Hobbs’ pledge.
Inside Hobbs’ recent visits
Hobbs took a recent official visit to Auburn on June 17 and called the program “(d)efinitely one of my top options,” according to On3’s Cole Pinkston. The 6-foot-4, 257 pound defensive lineman was hosted by Tigers defensive lineman Jeffrey M’ba and got to know position coach Jimmy Brumbaugh.
“Coach (Brumbaugh) was talking about like, what you believe in,” Hobbs said. “It’s the first time, really, that a coach has asked that. It was like what do you believe in, what are your thoughts on everything, and what do you stand for? I thought that was pretty cool. Not many coaches ask those questions for you and your family.”
He shared with Pinkston that he plans to take official visits to Alabama and “probably” Tennessee. Additionally, he hopes to return for a game at Jordan-Hare Stadium during the regular season.
“I’ll try to come for a game this year,” Hobbs said. “Definitely try to come back for a game this year. I didn’t realize how big the stadium was. I’ve never been here before. Seeing the Jumbotron, that was crazy.”

Nearly two months earlier, Hobbs took an unofficial visit to Penn State. During the trip to Happy Valley, he got to speak with head coach James Franklin and defensive line coach John Scott Jr.
Some of the discussions touched on how Hobbs would fit into the Nittany Lions’ defense, according to On3’s Ryan Snyder. At the time, he said he was hoping to set up an official visit with Penn State.
“When I went up there, it actually snowed,” Hobbs said. “Just seeing that big stadium with all the snow covering it was pretty cool. I liked that. I thought the facility was really nice, and the coaching staff was nice and I liked their team meeting a lot, too. Loved the energy of it. It seemed fun to be there.”
Hobbs also mentioned to Snyder that he is looking to commit in early August, but will take his time with his decision.
Daevin Hobbs On3 Scouting Summary
The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Daevin Hobbs:
“Nimble jumbo athlete who makes big plays as a tight end and defensive end, likely projecting along the defensive line long-term. Has good size, measuring at 6-foot-4.5 and in the 250-pound range with a wing-span close to 6-foot-10. Shows dominant tendencies as a two-way star at the high school level. Finished with 20 tackles for loss and 8 sacks as a junior. Moves well at his size. Shows the athleticism to run down plays in pursuit. Has the closing speed to finish plays behind the line with authority. A big threat down the seam at tight end and is talented enough to play on offense in college. Extends and elevates to come down with grabs over the middle of the field. A long-strider in the open field with speed to score on long receptions. A very good high school basketball player who was the MVP of a state title team as a junior. Throws down emphatic dunks in transition. Unrefined technically as a defensive lineman and should see improvement on that front once he focuses on the position at the next level. May need to adjust to the level of competition coming from a lower classification in high school.”
