Newberry (Fla.) four-star defensive lineman Jarquez Carter is down to six schools in his recruitment, he announced on Wednesday.

Among the remaining contenders are Florida, Florida State, Penn State, Miami, UCF and Ohio State.

Carter already has official visits locked in with the Hurricanes, Gators, Nittany Lions and Knights next month, and he is coming off visits to Miami, FSU, Alabama, USC and Ohio State this winter and spring.

The Gators are currently positioned as the favorite to land him, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM). Led by first-year defensive line coach Gerald Chatman, UF has made a strong impression on him since offering earlier this year.

Chatman was recently at Newberry High to watch Carter practice.

“That meant a lot,” he told Gators Online. “He was showing me that I’m a top guy. And I’m one of the top guys he’s looking for. After practice, he was telling me some things I could do and a lot of things he loved that I do. He said he loved my get-off. He loved that I’m one of the players he’d barely have to teach a lot of things to.”
