Before the official visits started in June, Notre Dame and Penn State were the schools many felt were the favorites to land Jason Moore. The No. 46 prospect in the On3 Consensus had been recruited by the Irish and the Nittany Lions since his freshman year. Ohio State entered the race a little later than those programs, but the Buckeyes won out for Moore’s commitment.

After visiting Columbus for the first time in the spring, he was back for an official visit late in June. After a week away from recruiting, the four-star defensive lineman out of Fort Washington (Md.) Dematha Catholic made his decision.

“After my visit to Ohio State, I went on vacation and I just thought about everything,” Moore told On3. “I talked with my family, I thought about the different schools, and over the weekend, I made the decision that it was Ohio State.

“It was a lot to think about it, and it was hard to say no to some of these schools, but at the end of the day, I had to do what was best for me. Ohio State is best for me and I feel great about my decision.”

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound rising senior let the Ohio State staff know of his decision on Tuesday. Larry Johnson was at a loss of words when he received the call from Jason Moore.

“I could tell coach Johnson was excited when I committed. He couldn’t even finish his sentences. He didn’t know what to say. I kept hearing him say ‘lets go’ and ‘I got him’…It was a special moment.”

Ohio State made a significant move over the last few months. They went into the DMV to land the best in Maryland and without Johnson, it wouldn’t have happened.

“Everyone knows about his resume. I feel coach Johnson will bring the best out of me on and off the field. He is the best coach in the country.

“I am putting a lot of trust in him to develop me, push me, and get me where I want to be. I believe he can do that. But there is more to coach Johnson. He cares about his guys. He has their backs. I talked to players and people that know him, and everyone loves and trusts him.

“Coach Johnson is a special guy and that is where my commitment started. He wants the best for his players on and off the field and I know I will have his support.”

There was more to Moore’s decision than coach Johnson. He was a big part of it, but Ohio State as a whole had what Moore was looking for.

“There are a lot of opportunities at Ohio State,” Moore said. “From the eduction to the internships to the mentorships, there is a lot for me outside of football.

“I also love how it is one big family there. Everyone supports each other. All have common goals. I felt the brotherhood there and it is big at Ohio State. The support is there, everyone loves Ohio State, and it is the best place for me.”
