4-star QB Marcel Reed makes 'tough decision,' commits to Texas A&M
Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy four-star quarterback Marcel Reed has committed to Texas A&M about one hour after decommitting from Ole Miss.
“It was a pretty tough decision,” Reed told On3. “I was committed to Ole Miss and I loved it there. Loved the coaches, loved the fans, loved the atmosphere every time I was up there. It was just it was hard to make because things just happened so fast in such a small amount of time. It’s hard to make a decision like that when you have seen stuff for so long and you go see another place for like a few days. It was a pretty tough decision but me and my family talked about it, and I felt comfortable with it so I pulled the trigger.”
Reed went on a visit to Texas A&M this past weekend, and Reed said going into Ole Miss had the advantage over Texas A&M and Auburn, who he was also considering.
But when he left the visit, his thinking had flipped and he started to believe Texas A&M was the right move.
It wasn’t an immediate decision. Reed spent most of Monday thinking about the decision and talking about it with his father and others.
“I felt comfortable with the people that I was around,” Reed said. “t was a small amount of time of me being there and they made me feel like I was home immediately.”
He said he was impressed with head coach Jimbo Fisher‘s history with quarterbacks and the job the Aggies did this year with Conner Weigman.

His father, Rod Reed, also emphasized the importance of Kevin Mashack, program’s Director of Player Personnel at Texas A&M. Mashack worked for Reed when the latter was the head coach at Tennessee State. The trust between Reed and Mashack — who hired this past spring by the Aggies — was a key factor in the Aggies working their way back into the recruitment and landing his son’s commitment.
Reed originally committed to Ole Miss in the spring. He said Texas A&M started to get more involved in his recruitment this fall when the rumors about Lane Kiffin potentially going to Auburn were starting up.
“Me and my dad were kind of hesitant on that and what was gonna happen there so we kind of opened up our options a little bit more,” Reed said.
Reed is the No. 318 overall prospect and No. 18 quarterback in the On3 Consensus. He is the only quarterback in the 2023 Aggies recruiting class.
