El Campo (Texas) five-star prospect and the nation’s No. 3 running back Rueben Owens has decommitted from Louisville. He originally committed to the Cardinals on June 20 in a decision that surprised many people in the recruiting world.

This is Owens’ second decommitment. He was originally committed to Texas from February 2021 to June 2021.

“First off I want to thank God for all he has done for me,” Owens wrote in a statement published to social media. “Without him none of this would have been possible, secondly I would like to thank my mom, dad, family and supporters for always supporting me throughout all the challenging decisions I have had to make. Thirdly, I would like to thank the Louisville family and fans for all of the love you have shown me throughout this process. This is bittersweet for me, due to all the relationships that have been developed. After talking to my parents and taking everything into consideration I have decided to decommit from the University of Louisville. I will remain prayerful and grateful in this journey.”

Owens is the No. 32 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He is also the No. 5 recruit from the state of Texas. The only recruits ahead of him are Katy (Texas) Paetow Five-Star Plus+ defensive lineman David Hicks, Denton (Texas) Guyer five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, Denton (Texas) Guyer five-star safety Peyton Bowen and Denton (Texas) Ryan five-star linebacker Anthony Hill.

Owens currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $245k. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

Rueben Owens Scouting Summary

The most productive rusher in the 2023 cycle. Dominates mid-level competition, rushing for nearly 3,000 yards and 46 touchdowns as a junior. Extremely efficient, rushing for over 12 yards per carry. Pairs very good long-speed with vision and contact balance. Has run sub-11.0 second marks in the 100 meters and carries that speed over to the field. Regularly pulls away from the competition. Bounces off tackles at the second level. Spins out of arm tackles. Does not give up on runs. Has also shown advanced ball skills as a pass catcher in the 7-on-7 setting. Does not appear to have a big frame at 5-foot-11 and under 200 pounds. Will need to add mass to his lower body to optimize leg drive and durability. Can improve his lateral agility as he gears down to cut at times. Older for the class, turning 19 years old in the middle of his senior season.
