5-star commitments in August

Eleven days into the month of August — and just under four months until National Signing Day — only 10 5-star recruits in the On3 Industry Ranking are uncommitted.

June and July were predictably busy months for elite prospects making their decisions, but August has the chance to top them all.

Two five-stars — receiver Kaliq Lockett and safety Trey McNutt — already announced their decisions earlier in the month. And five more of the nation’s top 32 prospects are scheduled to commit before August ends, and a few others could be in the works, too.

Monday, August 12

5-star IOL Josh Petty
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 29
On3 RPM favors: Georgia Tech 90.9%

The Skinny: The No. 29 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking took official visits to Florida State, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Stanford and Tennessee. After those official visits in June, Petty made unofficial visits to Florida State and Georgia Tech during the last week of July. The Seminoles have been viewed as a favorite, but less than 24 hours away from Petty’s announcement, Georgia Tech has the most buzz around it, according to On3’s Chad Simmons.

Saturday, August 17

Five-Star Plus+ OT David Sanders Jr.
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 2
On3 RPM favors: Tennessee 82.0%

The Skinny: Tennessee, Ohio State, Nebraska and Georgia round Sanders’ top four, but in recent months, the focus has largely been on the Buckeyes, Vols and Huskers.

Sanders visited Rocky Top and Lincoln at the end of July, as the Huskers and their NIL collective turned up the heat on him in a major way. But just under a week out from his decision date on August 17, Sanders is trending heavily to the Volunteers, according to the RPM.

Wednesday, August 21

5-star OT Michael Fasusi
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 12
On3 RPM favors: Texas 63.2%

The Skinny: The battle for Fasusi, the country’s No. 3 OT, has largely been down to Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma since earlier this summer. Oregon is technically still in the mix, but the three schools closer to home have been the major contenders. Texas has been the RPM leader for most of that time, but according to InsideTexas.com’s Justin Wells, Oklahoma is making a strong late push with less than two weeks to go.

Saturday, August 24

5-star SAF Jonah Williams
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 10
On3 RPM favors: Oregon 50.2%

The Skinny: Five hats are currently slated to be on the table when his Aug. 24 decision rolls around: USC, Oregon, Texas, LSU and Texas A&M. Of the five programs in the mix, Texas has likely had the least buzz in Williams’ recruitment this summer. Oregon has had the momentum since his official visit to Eugene, but there’s still confidence at LSU, Texas and Texas A&M that they can land the two-sport star.

Friday, August 30

5-star WR Jaime Ffrench
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 18
On3 RPM favors: Texas 57.2%

The Skinny: Since his decommitment from Alabama in January, Ffrench has been high on multiple programs in the past seven months. Ohio State carried major momentum at one point, as did LSU. Texas has been the perceived leader over the summer, but Miami is the closest school to home and a major threat as well. With three weeks until decision day, there could still be a few final turns in this one.
