5-star safety Caleb Downs has a commitment date set
Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek five-star safety Caleb Downs is the fourth-highest ranked uncommitted recruit in the 2023 cycle.
But that will soon no longer be the case.
The nation’s No. 1 safety will be announcing his college decision July 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
“It’s gonna be good to get it over with and then to be ready to go to college,” Downs told On3
Downs took official visits to Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State during the month of June. He said there are three schools he is considering at this point.
The timeline for his decision is key as Downs wants to be able to focus 100% on his high school football season and accomplish his goals.
“Before the season just to focus on my senior year, try to win a championship this year, put all my effort into that and my mental power so I don’t have to worry about making a decision anymore,” Downs said.
Downs ranks as the No. 12 overall player in the 2023 On300 ranking and the nation’s No. 1 safety. He is the unanimous No. 1 safety recruit in the country, ranked by all four major recruiting sites as the top player at the position.

“It’s been a long process, very difficult because you make relationships with all these coaches,” Downs said. “You see certain qualities in each of them that you like. To tell somebody no that you think you have a good relationship with is going to be the tough part for me. Because I’ve never been that good at that.”
The No. 1 prospect in Georgia is not looking forward to telling multiple schools no. He has close relationships with numerous coaches, but he knows it is time to make those calls.
“It is going to be hard to make this decision, but I have it down to three schools. It will come down to the belief in the coaches, the program they run, and that I will be able to succeed. I am still thinking about it and it is going to come down to the wire.”
