No. 1 women's basketball recruit Aaliyah Chavez visiting Texas on Sunday

Fresh off her first-ever state championship run, five-star recruit Aaliyah Chavez can now turn her attention to her recruitment.
Chavez is set to announce her commitment on March 25, but will be considering multiple schools before that date. Texas is considered one of the major contenders to land her, and according to a report from OnTexasFootball.com’s Blake Munroe, Chavez is visiting the Longhorns on Sunday for their game against SEC rival Florida.
Texas head coach Vic Schaefer attended one of her playoff games last month, and UT looks to be making a big push to keep its top recruiting target home over the next month. Along with Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Carolina and UCLA, the Longhorns are among her top five schools. However, On3’s Talia Goodman reported last month that the Bruins were no longer in the running for the nation’s No. 1 recruit.
Chavez put a bow on legendary high school career
Behind 19 points from Chavez — who was constantly double- and triple-teamed — Monterey High won the Texas 5A Division II state title on Saturday night. With the completion of her historic four-year career, Chavez finished with an eye-popping 4,796 career points. She has scored more than 1,400 of those this year (35.3 PPG) while leading Monterey to a 37-5 record and its first title.

Her performance in the state playoffs has only added to her astounding career achievements. In Monterey’s five postseason games prior to Saturday’s title game, she averaged 31.4 points per contest, including games of 50 and 45 earlier in the playoffs. And did so while being hounded by opposing defenses looking to slow her down.
In Tuesday’s state semifinal game, she finished with one of her lowest scoring outputs of the season — 20 points — but hit a clutch 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and another bucket in the final minute to give Monterey a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. On Saturday, she finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals as the Lady Plainsmen rolled to 64-35 win over Liberty Hill.
In addition to being the state’s Gatorade girls basketball player of the year in 2023-24, she was also a finalist for the national award and will likely be again this year. Chavez is also set to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game on April 1 and the Nike Hoop Summit on April 12 in Portland.
