Michigan enters the game coming off its third straight Big Ten title and another undefeated season. The last two years, the Wolverines lost to Georgia and TCU, respectively, in the CFP semifinals.

Alabama meanwhile knocked off Georgia in the SEC Championship Game to finish 12-1 and get in as the fourth and final seed. The Crimson Tide missed the playoff last year but made it to the national title game two seasons ago, a loss to the Bulldogs.

“Just that your dreams can come true, your goals can come true,” Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said of the team’s desire this season after the last two years. “Our team is very definite that this is where they wanted to be. This is one of their goals — the goal. This is what we hoped for, what we worked for, exactly where we want to be. And now we’re just ready to have at it.”

Led by JJ McCarthy, Blake Corum and Roman Wilson on offense, while guys like Mike Sainristil captain the defense, this could be the best Michigan team under Harbaugh.

On the flip side, Nick Saban arguably had the best coaching job of his career, considering the rollercoaster ride earlier this season.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe might be one of the top Heisman candidates next season as well. But this Crimson Tide team rallied following an early season loss to Texas after many thought this would be an average year.

“Well, we had some really good rat poison early,” Saban said. “It was almost like Wheaties because everybody criticized us and said we weren’t any good and we were done and Coach Saban is past his prime and all that. It was like eating Wheaties, breakfast of champions. That helped us.

“So now can we handle the success, that’s the next question.”
