In November, Gonzaga picked up a commitment from 6-foot-8 wing forward Alex Toohey. The final four schools in his recruitment also included Davidson, Michigan, and Villanova. The Australian took official visits to all four programs.

Toohey is considered Australia’s top prospect in the 2023 class. The 18-year-old has played in four games with the senior Australian National Team.

The Gonzaga signee plays his high school/club ball with the NBA Global Academy, a branch of the NBA Academy based in Canberra, Australia. He made one of his few stateside appearances this week in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Tarkanian Classic.

I caught up with Alex Toohey after a live viewing in Las Vegas.

What can the fans and coaches at Gonzaga expect from you?

Toohey: “They can expect an up-tempo player who is not afraid to get it done on both ends of the court. I’ll impact the game in multiple ways, defend, rebound, outlet pass, make shots, etc.”

Throughout the recruiting process, what was Gonzaga’s recruiting pitch to you?

Toohey: “They weren’t really over the top with anything. They know what a great program they have. They told me what they had to offer and how I fit into their system.”

What do you expect your role to be as a freshman?

Toohey: “I don’t really have any expectations. I expect to come in and do whatever the team needs.”

What was the most exciting part of your visit, and what are you most looking forward to?

Toohey: “Hanging out with the team, getting to be a part of that culture was really special for me. Playing under a coach like Mark Few, with his history of winning and his history of playing with international players, is really exciting.”

Do you have a message for Gonzaga fans?

Toohey: “I plan to continue building on the legacy they already have and keep winning.”
