AP Poll Top 25 College Basketball Rankings released after Week 1
The newest college basketball rankings are here as the 2024-25 AP Poll Top 25 was updated after Week 1 of the season.
There’s not much to really get all “hot-takey” after the first couple of games, but there were some results that stood out. But we’ll let the season develop before making March predictions!
Let’s dive into the latest AP Poll Top 25 rankings after Week 1 of the season.
1. Kansas
Kansas started out the season 2-0 and beat UNC on Friday. If you get a top 10 win to open the season, you’re not going anywhere.
Hunter Dickinson put up 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in that win. Zeke Mayo added 21 points, five rebounds and four assists.
2. Alabama
Alabama also started the season 2-0 but had their struggles with Arkansas State. But they pulled away in the second half.
In their first contest, it was like a warmup game. The Crimson Tide dominated UNC Asheville 110-54. Nate Oats’ squad should be in title contention all year.
3. UConn
UConn got off to a blazing start with two wins over Sacred Heart and New Hampshire. There’s been no dropoff since last year’s national title team.
A new look lineup? No problem. In fact, UConn won its games 92-56 and 92-53 back to back. Yeah, they’re pretty good.
4. Gonzaga (+2)
Gonzaga raced out to a 2-0 start to the season, which included a top 10 win over Baylor to open the campaign. Granted, the Bulldogs had to hang on against Arizona State, but the Gonzaga win stands out.
In that win, a 101-63 win over the Bears, it was all ‘Zags. It was a balanced attack, led by Nolan Hickman who put up 17 points, six rebounds and one assist.
5. Auburn (+6)
Auburn won its first game over Vermont 94-43, rolling to a win. But it was the second game that raised eyebrows.
An early season tilt against Houston? No problem, the Tigers just went on the road and upset the Cougars. Team plane incident aside, they got the win and Tahaad Pettiford put up 21 points, three rebounds and three assists.
6. Duke (+1)
Duke raced out to a 2-0 start with wins over Maine and Army at home. They’ll take on Kentucky Tuesday which will be must-see TV for early season college basketball.
This is a young group, but the veterans who transferred in should help them settle soon. In the latest win, freshman Cooper Flagg had 13 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

7. Iowa State (-2)
Iowa State played one game so far, but it was a dominant win over Mississippi Valley State. As they build in the non-conference slate, the Cyclones should emerge as one of the best teams in the Big 12.
They get big games against Auburn and Marquette later this month, which should be good measuring sticks before getting closer to Christmas. They’re back in action Monday night against Kansas City.
8. Houston (-4)
Houston lost to Auburn, which stands out on the early schedule. It’s not the biggest deal in the world since the Cougars lost a ranked game. It’s too early!
They opened the season with a 97-40 win over Jackson State. Houston will be back in action Wednesday against Louisiana-Lafayette.
9. Arizona (+1)
Arizona is 2-0 to start the season with two dominant non-conference wins. ‘Nuff said about the Wildcats right?
But the schedule starts to pick up this week with a road game against Wisconsin. Then next week, the Wildcats have a date with Duke before the calendar turns to December.
10. North Carolina (-1)
UNC is just 1-1 to start the season, but please Tar Heel fans, don’t panic! North Carolina beat Elon 90-76 to open the year before falling to Kansas.
Kansas is the No. 1 team in the country after all. We’ll see how the non-conference plays out in the coming weeks, including a December matchup with No. 2 Alabama.
