J.D.'s rankings for Week 2

The latest AP Poll Top 25 after Week 1 of college football is here and we saw some big movement among the best teams in the sport.

Following Clemson’s upset loss to Duke Monday night, the poll was shaken up as a top 10 team went down already. You gotta love college football and what it brings week-to-week.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the latest AP Poll Top 25 rankings as we head into Week 2.

1. Georgia

Georgia didn’t waste any time in Week 1. The Bulldogs took care of business over Tennessee-Martin and barring anything out of the ordinary, this was always a win for Georgia.

All of the quarterbacks played and Carson Beck was solid. That’s all you can really ask for in the first game. At this rate, Georgia still looks like the best team in college football despite some roster turnover.

2. Michigan

Michigan immortalized Jim Harbaugh during the game and it led to win. In all seriousness, the Wolverines love their head coach. Just two more games until he’s back on the sidelines on game day.

JJ McCarthy was solid, so was Blake Corum and the defense nearly pitched a shutout at home against East Carolina. A prime recipe for success and you can expect Michigan to keep its foot on the gas in non-conference play.

3. Alabama (+1)

Alabama did the same thing as SEC foe Georgia: just take care of business. Jalen Milroe looked like the entrenched starting quarterback but the pressure is on this coming week.

Can Milroe keep the offense rolling against Texas? There’s buzz about Nick Saban being on upset alert at home against Steve Sarkisian. Remember, Saban’s only lost once to a former assistant in his entire career.

4. Florida State (+4)

The Seminoles made a statement and the rest of the college football world heard it. The dominant win over LSU showed huge strides compared to last season and this looks like a bonafide national title contender.

Yes, it’s one game, but Jordan Travis and the Florida State offense does not want to be trifled with. Good luck guarding Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman when they’re on the field at the same time. Oh yeah, Jaheim Bell and Trey Benson too, they’re quite dangerous. Doesn’t FSU have a defender named Jared Verse as well?

5. Ohio State (-2)

The Buckeyes were on shaky ground in Week 1. Yes, it was a Big Ten opponent in Indiana, but Ohio State didn’t impress many during the weekend in a 23-3 victory.

Kyle McCord got his first start and wasn’t anything special. Could it get better throughout the season? Absolutely. But first things first, where was Marvin Harrison Jr.? Sure the defense was nice, but that wasn’t a typical Ryan Day offensive performance.

6. USC

The Caleb Williams show is fantastic and two games proved it once again. Yes, both opponents were outside the Power Five for USC, but there’s no denying the talent of the offense.

The Trojans will go as far as Williams will take them. Can the defense hold up? That seems to be the biggest question, yet again, as USC attempts a playoff run this year. At least the linebacker position seems to be solid in depth, something Lincoln Riley praised after the game.

7. Penn State

Penn State didn’t waste any time showing off the improvement from last year. We’re not saying the Nittany Lions made huge jumps, but the Nittany Lions want some respect as a playoff contender.

Drew Allar was solid, James Franklin wants to use a second quarterback in Beau Pribula as well, so we’ll see how that goes. But overall, Penn State was impressive and could be a thorn in the side of Michigan and Ohio State.

8. Washington (+2)

Michael Penix Jr. was fantastic once again, proving his resurgent year was no fluke. The Huskies completely outplayed an overmatched Boise State squad and boy, he looks like the best quarterback in the conference outside of Caleb Williams.

Penix Jr. threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns, just an average day at the offense. Tulsa is next followed by a road date against Michigan State. The schedule definitely plays in the Huskies’ favor.

9. Tennessee (+3)

Joe Milton showed off his arm against Virginia to open the season. He tossed 201 yards and two touchdowns and freshman Nico Iamaleava got an opportunity to play too. Tennessee seems to be good at QB

Is this team better than last year? It’s going to take the meat of the SEC schedule to really determine that, but the Volunteers didn’t miss a beat in the opening week and are expected to keep it rolling.

10. Notre Dame (+3)

Sam Hartman kept it rolling for the Fighting Irish. Good luck stopping this offense this season when the former ACC all-time passer is running things for Notre Dame. Can we start the Heisman Trophy talk yet?

This looks like a playoff contender if we do say so ourselves. It’s early, but two games is a nice preview of what they can. Imagine the hype for the games against Ohio State and USC this year!
