The 2022-23 college basketball season tipped off this week and the action proved just dramatic enough to shake up the AP Poll top 25 rankings.

The Tennessee Volunteers, which started the season at No. 11 in the top 25, fell to an auspicious Colorado squad 78-66 on Sunday. Though the Vols remain ranked after their opening week slip-up, the loss cost them 11 spots.

“I didn’t like our mindset coming in, we think we’re good enough to just go out there and play, today proved we’re not,” Vols head coach Rick Barnes said after the loss. “We got wild, I mean, I’m looking out there like I don’t have a clue what we’re doing. Our guard play set the tone in a negative way for us. … They controlled the game from start to finish.”

Tennessee has an opportunity to shake off the upset loss with a game versus Florida Gulf Coast before the Battle 4 Atlantis begins. They aren’t the only ones who need to put Week 1 in the past. Villanova lost to Temple 68-64 and the Oregon Ducks came up short versus UC Irvine with a final score of 69-56. Both of those teams fell out of the top 25 but they’re still in the receiving votes category.

The lack of high-profile matchups in Week 1 will not carry into Week 2 of the season. The No. 2 Gonzaga Bulldogs have a big week coming up after a 2-0 start. They face No. 11 Texas on Wednesday before the much-hyped neutral site game versus No. 4 Kentucky on Sunday. No. 5 Baylor also takes on No. 16 Virginia on Friday.

Here’s how the AP pollsters ranked the top 25 programs in the country after Week 1.
