Updated AP Top 25 poll released following Week 6

Another week of college football has come and gone, and there is a lot to unpack after the latest action. Six ranked teams fell in Week 6, including three to unranked opponents. Other teams barely survived upset scares, and many teams are also dealing with prominent injuries, especially at quarterback. Following all of the Week 6 action, an updated AP Top 25 Poll has been released.

No. 1 Alabama went down to the wire with Texas A&M, with the Aggies possessing the ball on the goal-line in the final seconds. The Crimson Tide defense made a play at the end, keeping the Aggies out of the endzone and escaping with a narrow 24-20 victory. Beyond Alabama, though, the top ten cruised through the weekend. No top ten teams lost in Week 6, while No. 10 Penn State was on bye.

You didn’t have to look far beyond the top ten to find losses in last week’s AP Top 25, as No. 11 Utah fell 42-32 to No. 18 UCLA. No. 13 Kentucky was without Will Levis, and the Wildcats weren’t able to overcome that in a 24-14 defeat against South Carolina. No. 16 BYU fell against unranked Notre Dame, as well.

Additionally, No. 17 TCU handled its business against No. 19 Kansas, with the Horned Frogs winning 38-31 in an exciting matchup. No. 21 Washington lost its second game of the year, falling 45-38 to Arizona State.

Finally, No. 8 Tennessee proved that it is one of the top teams in the nation with a dominating 40-13 triumph over No. 25 LSU. The Vols continue to climb in the rankings, and have seemingly played themselves into the College Football Playoff conversation.

After the dust has settled on Week 6, a new AP Top 25 is out and the attention has shifted towards Week 7. As teams try to get healthy and build their resumes, the polls are poised to continue being revamped on a weekly basis. Here is the latest AP Top 25, which features a new No. 1 team and other major shakeups from last week’s rankings.

You didn’t have to read too far to see the massive shakeups in this week’s rankings, as Georgia re-took the top spot and Ohio State came in behind them at No. 2. That means that Alabama dropped two spots, coming in at No. 3.

UCLA and Mississippi State were the biggest risers this week, with the Bruins jumping up seven spots to No. 11 and the Bulldogs jumping seven spots to No. 16. Utah and Kentucky each dropped nine spots, with the Utes coming in at No. 20 and the Wildcats at No. 22.

Three new teams joined the rankings after Week 6. Texas jumped back into the top 25 after dominating Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown. The Longhorns came in at No. 22. Illinois and James Madison also leaped into the top 25, taking the final two spots. BYU (previously No. 16), Washington (previously No. 21), and LSU (previously No. 25) dropped out of this week’s rankings.

North Carolina was the top vote-getter outside of the top 25, with the Tar Heels receiving 98 total votes. Baylor (91), BYU (61), Coastal Carolina (61), Notre Dame (58), Florida (56), Tulane (42), Purdue (34), Florida State (18), South Carolina (12), and Washington State (10) were the other teams to receive at least ten votes.
