Appalachian State DL rips helmet off teammate, uses it to swing at player's head

Whether it’s during training camp at the NFL level or fall camp in college, tempers are known to flare from time to time as teams square off against one another day after day ahead of the season. But things boiled over in an alarming way during a recent practice at Appalachian State.
A Twitter account named App State Leaks released practice footage from a team period of fall camp for the Mountaineers. Which showed a play where a defensive lineman ripped off the helmet of an offensive lineman blocking him and struck him in the head with it.
The startling footage can be seen below.
The App State defender’s helmet was already off and rolling on the field when the leaked practice footage starts rolling. Likely alluding to the defensive lineman’s helmet being ripped off by the offensive lineman before escalating the situation and striking him in the head with his own helmet.
The offensive lineman who was struck appears to be No. 73 for Appalachian State Garner Langlo. Who joined the Mountaineers this offseason through the transfer portal after spending the first three years of his career at Auburn.
Langlo did not appear in any games for the Tigers in his three years with the program. Rated as a three-star prospect out of Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, Florida where he was the No. 653 ranked player and the No. 56 offensive tackle in the 2021 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Thankfully, like many other teams, Appalachian State uses protective Guardian Caps over their helmet at practice. Which likely softened the blow to Langlo’s head to a certain extent. But there’s no question that the violent act was a dangerous one that certainly doesn’t paint a positive picture of the App State program.
It’s hard to view the leaked practice footage and not think about the incident between Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph during the 2019 NFL season. A reference made in the original video and several other shares of the practice footage on social media after Garrett struck Rudolph in the head with his own helmet in a Week 11 matchup. Two separate instances that are unfortunately reminiscent five years apart.
The Mountaineers enter the 2024 season as the preseason favorites to win the Sun Belt Conference, also facing off against Liberty and Clemson this year in matchups that could potential help place them firmly in the College Football Playoff picture as the lone Group of Five representative.
