WATCH: Appalachian State wins with insane walk-off Hail Mary touchdown pass
Appalachian State certainly has a flair for the dramatic. One week after upsetting No. 6 Texas A&M to steal a likely ESPN College GameDay appearance from the Aggies the Mountaineers managed to one-up themselves with a ridiculous last-second win on a Hail Mary to secure a 32-28 win over Troy.
From its own 47-yard line, Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice chucked it deep. The pass sailed down to about the 5-yard line, where it was tipped and hauled in by receiver Christian Horn.
Horn, facing the wrong end zone, gathered his wits and raced in toward the right pylon to give Appalachian State the 32-28 win as time expired.
The Mountaineers would have had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal thanks to an odd decision by Troy in the game’s waning moments, but Appalachian State couldn’t quite drive it into field goal range before its magical play occurred.
The Trojans opted to take a safety in the final minute rather than punt the ball away, facing fourth-and-1 from its own 11-yard line. That made the score 28-26 Troy. Kimani Vidal took a snap out of the shotgun and then raced out of the corner of his own end zone, burning a little clock in the process.

That left 20 seconds remaining.
After the ensuing kickoff burned another five seconds, the Mountaineers opted to throw it long. That’s when Brice’s deep throw resulted in the miracle deflection and snag by Horn for the win.
Appalachian State games becoming appointment TV
It’s the third straight game that has had heart-stopping action for the Appalachian State faithful.
The Mountaineers nearly engineered an upset of North Carolina on opening week, going toe-to-toe with the Tar Heels in a 63-61 upset. But they couldn’t convert on a pair of fourth-down conversions that would have helped them pull level, and North Carolina survived.
Then, last week, Appalachian State managed to score one of the biggest upsets of the year when it took down then-No. 6 Texas A&M in College Station.
Saturday’s last-second win over Troy makes the Mountaineers 2-1 on the young season. Appalachian State will return to action next week against James Madison.
