After months of anticipation, Arizona cornerback Tacario Davis has decided to withdraw from the transfer portal, On3 has learned.

Ranked in the On3 Industry Ranking as the third-best available player in the portal, he’s been on the college football free agency market since January. The AP Second-Team All-Pac-12 selection decided to enter shortly after former Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch left for the Washington job.

Sources indicated to On3 for months that a return to the Wildcats to play for Brent Brennan was on the table. During the process, sources also indicated that a range of Big Ten and SEC teams expressed interest. Davis was with the program throughout winter workouts and spring practice. He also had a do not contact tag on his portal entry, ensuring he could go through the process at his own pace.

The cornerback led the Pac-12 in 2023 with 16 passes defended while finishing with 25 tackles and one interception. He started in 11 of 13 contests this past season as a sophomore.

What is the transfer portal?

The spring transfer portal window is just 15 days, a crammed period that could reshape the 2024 college football offseason. The portal tool was launched in 2018 to allow athletes to be more involved in the process of transferring. Athletes must notify institutions of their intent to transfer. Each school’s compliance team has 48 hours to put a name into the portal.

After an athlete is officially in the portal, there is no rush on making a decision as long as they are properly enrolled at a new institution in time for fall camp. Commitments do not have to be made during the 15-day window. Grad transfers are allowed to enter the portal at any time.

Roster retention has been crucial for programs, with NIL playing a vital role in keeping rosters together in the new age of college football. Exactly 645 FBS players transferred in last year’s spring window. In one week of the 2024 spring transfer portal, 497 FBS scholarship players have entered.
