Tempers flared on Sunday in a women’s college soccer match between the Rutgers and UMass. Things got aggressive between both teams and the physical play eventually escalated into a fight between the two teams. Rutgers’ Gia Girman slide tackled a UMass player to the ground, leaving her rolling on the ground in pain. That infuriated UMass teammate Ashley Lamond, who began exchanging punches with Girman.
Both Gia Girman of Rutgers and Ashley Lamond of UMass were officially ejected by the referee, Stephanie McFarland, at 54:48 of the game, once the scuffle was finally broken up.
Here is video of the scuffle below.
UMass ended up winning the game, handing Rutgers a 1-0 loss at Rudd Field, with 486 people in attendance.
Rutgers started the game with a very physical style that got them six fouls in just over 30 minutes in the first half. Despite the physical play, UMass goalkeeper Bella Mendoza was able to keep the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes.
Once both players were ejected in the second half, it took away one of the top offensive playmakers for Rutgers, which put them in a tough situation. The Rutgers defense was able to keep them in the game, holding UMass without a goal for the first 80 minutes of the game on Sunday. But the Minutewomen were able to break through for their first goal of the game after Bella Recinos fired a shot pass Scarlet Knights goalie Olivia Bodmer.
