4-star DL Ashton Porter announces top five schools, commitment date
Cypress (Texas) Cy Ranch four-star defensive lineman Ashton Porter revealed his top five schools and commitment date on Thursday afternoon. He will be announcing his decision on Jan. 3 and choosing between Houston, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Oregon and TCU.
Porter was previously committed to Northwestern before backing off his pledge to the Wildcats on Oct. 16. His most recent visit was to the Horned Frogs on Oct. 22.
The 6-foot-2.5, 255-pound prospect is the No. 308 overall prospect and No. 41 defensive lineman in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 54 player in Texas.
What to know about Porter’s recruitment
According to On3’s Sam Spiegelman, the Spartans are the team to watch for Porter’s pledge. On Oct. 16, he logged an On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine pick for Michigan State to land Porter.

“From talking to sources with knowledge of Porter’s recruitment, Michigan State is currently trending as the team best positioned with the talented defensive lineman,” Spiegelman wrote on Oct. 17. “Porter isn’t expected to make a final decision until the Under Armour All-America Game in January 2023, which certainly opens up the door for other contenders to enter the picture. Miami, Arkansas and Baylor have all kept tabs on Porter and could pose some competition to the Spartans with another talented 2023 target.”
The Spartans received an official visit from Porter on Oct. 7. Michigan State and TCU are the only finalists to receive a visit from the Lone Star State native.
Porter has an On3 NIL Valuation of $10.7K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
